#15481 new and need help

Posted by Marge on 04 September 2006 - 12:37 PM in RootsMagic 3

I vaguely remember something like this before and think it had to do with the Yahoo tool bar -- but when I tried a search on that could not come up with anything. so I may be wrong.[size=7]

#13729 Relationship of Child to New Parent

Posted by Marge on 24 May 2006 - 09:48 AM in RootsMagic 3

QUOTE(Ken Meyers @ May 22 2006, 01:25 AM) View Post

I agree with Jilliane. I would like to have this possibility added and I would like to see this type information in narrative reports, and specifically which (or if both) parent(s) adopted the child and likewise for step children. In some cases the step children are obvious by name, but in other cases they are not.

My wish would be inclusion in all reports for foster parents also since my father was reared by foster parents and he considered them his parents (even tho they weren't related by blood).

#12273 Publish Book

Another place where this feature would be great is for cousin marriages in the same line. It would reduce paper and be more reader-friendly.

#12263 Publish Book

Oh, my goodness; this would be WONDERFUL. It's something I have wished for but never thought to express through this forum.

#11600 IGI Search

Posted by Marge on 16 February 2006 - 12:25 PM in RootsMagic 3

This morning when I tried the IGI search, I got a blank page - after removing the user name and password from Options (thanks to this forum), I closed the IGI search page, reopened it, and the page was there at the login screen. I entered my name and password, and got the message "password expired". After changing my password everything worked fine. This might be the problem for everyone.

#10804 How Specify Sources

Posted by Marge on 12 January 2006 - 12:03 PM in General Messages

QUOTE(landbrake @ Mar 19 2005, 08:58 AM) View Post

Thanks for the reply, Patricia. That seems to make sense, and it's pretty much how I've been doing it, except (alas) in most cases I haven't added info about "my source's source". But it also opens up some further questions. Say, for example, four different sources quote an out-of-print book as being their original source of information. I'd put in each of these individual sources, with citation detail naming the particular book. Now say I managed to get my grubby hands on a REAL copy of the book in question, and wanted to go back and update my sources... do I have a way to easily identify all the facts/sources where that book was named? I haven't been able to figure out a way to search on, or report on, particular sources that "contain" a piece of information in the way you can search for individuals by value of a field.

For on-line sourcing, very good information may be found in QuickSheet Citing Online Historical Resources by Elizabeth Shown Mills. Also for all sourcing a good guuide to follow would be Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian 1997, 15th printing (it says there's a revision in progress).

#10208 Marriage Fact

My wish was granted! biggrin.gif I hadn't done a report since 3.0.3 so didn't realize that had changed. I think I wished for it to happen a couple of times. Thank you Bruce.

#9356 Manual Merge

Posted by Marge on 19 October 2005 - 12:07 PM in RootsMagic 3

Thanks Alfred for trying to help. I don't know how it happened. Everytime I enter a new person I source every fact and personal source so I know where I got everything - even the name of the person. This happened the first (and only) time I had used the manual merge since upgrading. The only other possible solution was that I had a brain lapse and didn't source those items - but I really can't imagine that I forgot to source two people (husband and wife). I checked all my other recent data entries and everything was sourced. Of course I couldn't check the two that I merged since they were added after my backup. I'll continue to watch this if I need to merge more people. This was a case where I had discovered the spouse's surname and birthdates of both in an IGI search and in census reports.

#9336 Manual Merge

Posted by Marge on 18 October 2005 - 04:21 PM in RootsMagic 3

Help. I just performed a manual merge where the newer record (with all kinds of sources) was merged into the older record. NO SOURCES CAME OVER. Luckily I had a relatively recent (within about a half hour) backup, so would only lose whatever I had done in that time. But why did the birth source, general source, census source not come with the facts? I'm am using RM 3.0.3.

#9113 RM3 vs. FTM2006

Posted by Marge on 05 October 2005 - 01:25 PM in RootsMagic 3

Here's my 2 cents worth! I left FTM after version 9 because there was no way to edit the place list and trying to merge the source list was impossible. I duplicated entries in FTM and FO 10 until RM came out and I swtched to RM exclusively. I have never used the charting capability of any program, so ease of charts in FTM was NOT an incentive to me. I did like the way the narrative report was done in FTM which was one of the reasons I kept it so long; but that didn't outweigh the down side. RootsMagic is (for me) the best software for us amateurs.

There is a way to erase the auto fill, quoted text, and a button just below that does not quote anything. but who remembers to use them?

I agree with you, but I haven't located the buttons you mentioned.

#8871 New RM

Posted by Marge on 26 September 2005 - 11:02 AM in RootsMagic 3

I agree. I used FO from v 2 (I think) and switched to RM when it came available and love the software. I have had none of the problems mentioned in the forums. Try downloading the trial version and play around with it. That's the best way to decide. BTW if you import a gedcom from FO you might not be able to add anyone else.

#8278 RootsMagic 3 to be released

Posted by Marge on 07 September 2005 - 01:36 PM in RootsMagic 3

Just downloaded version 3 (couldn't wait for the cd). Thank you for putting the source merge in the logical place. So far, everything I've tried in the new version works great.

#8277 How useful is the Wish List

Posted by Marge on 07 September 2005 - 12:58 PM in RootsMagic Wish List

I just checked the detail listing of improvements and there are improvements that were initiated from the wish list. My favorite: merging sources from the master source list.

#8274 Pop up calendar

While reviewing the list of items in the Feature List, I saw the following:
Pop up calendar when entering dates.  But when I am adding dates to a new person, I can only access a date calculator, not the calendar.  Am I missing a step or something? dry.gif

The calendar is on the Edit Fact menu.

Thanks Don. I was afraid that might be the case - sigh, another extra step.
