#25753 GEDCOM default folder not working

Posted by BarryEvans on 16 April 2009 - 12:48 PM in Issues

Jaymikel- I don't think that is the case, plenty of programs over ride the Windows system. What is the point of having the Folders list otherwise?

And, I'm growing a little weary of saying this, it worked fine in RM3 sleep.gif

#25746 GEDCOM default folder not working

Posted by BarryEvans on 16 April 2009 - 08:08 AM in Issues

Even though I have set a default folder for GEDCOMs in Tools/Program Options/Folders, I am not taken there when I File/Import/GEDCOM/I know where the file is.
Rather I seem to be taken to the last folder I used while using the program, e.g. media folder or something.

Anyone else?

#25572 Problem with RM4 after heavy useage

Posted by BarryEvans on 10 April 2009 - 01:50 AM in Issues

This really is a hard one to pin down, but its happened enough times now that I am starting to worry.

After I've hammered the family keys for a good few hours (you know, one of those sessions where the keyboard smokes from adding new people, relationships, census, adding facts, reports, re-arranging sources and places [yawn], fixing stuff that doesn't work in RM4 [yawn x 2] etc) a strange thing happens in RM4...

I can not edit children of a family. In family view, even if I highlight a child and try to edit them, I get the edit details of the father or mother. No matter what I do, RM4 gets stuck on the father or mother. The only fix is to close and restart RM4.

This is very hard to replicate systematically as it only occurs after long heavy sessions and I can not pick up any patterns, especially because I'm also a bit gaga towards the end of one of these sessions and also require a reboot wacko.gif But it is definately happening on my system (Dell Pentium 1 gig RAM Win XP pro SP3) and appears to be a core database/memory issue. And -no- it never happened in RM3.

Anyone else getting this?

RM4 is starting to seriously worry me sad.gif

#25474 RM4 Attaching Email

Posted by BarryEvans on 08 April 2009 - 07:37 AM in RootsMagic 3

I think its indicative of how limited RM's corrspondence list (Lists/Correspondence Lists) is, that no one has so far even mentioned it. It is my understanding that this was supposed to be the exact tool to help handle such information, i.e. as part of a inter-linked sequence (ToDos, Addresses, Repositories, Correspondence, leading to facts) that could -if developed- be a wonderfully powerful software tool to facilitate genealogical research, but which have become stagnant under-utilised, almost redundant add-ons. None of them have been touched for years and in the case of ToDo have gone backward in RM4 sad.gif

#25382 RM3 to RM4 Death Fact date not converted

Posted by BarryEvans on 06 April 2009 - 04:32 PM in RootsMagic 3

I don't think I have seen this mentioned so far, and can't find in search?...

When I import my database from RM3 to RM4, the age of death is not calculated by RM4 when the death fact only contains a Year (with or without a prefix such as 'bef' 'abt' etc). Works OK when day/month/year or month/year is given. The original Year-only death facts are good as RM3 calculates age. Problem can only be fixed in RM4 by manually editing the year and saving, but -of course- that aint whats supposed to happen mad.gif

Anyone else get this? (Check by going to People view and quickly looking for persons with death date either year only or full date, then open their edit screen... you'll quickly pick up a pattern). If so, its a Bug ohmy.gif

#25005 Use of Alt Name fact

Posted by BarryEvans on 30 March 2009 - 02:12 AM in RootsMagic 3

QUOTE(Romer @ Mar 30 2009, 12:38 AM) View Post

I use the name given at birth as the individual's name and record any other names as alternate name facts.

If you do this (and I can understand why), which of the 'Name type' would you choose under the circumstances I outlined above?

And I also agree with Arthur's choice!

#24988 Use of Alt Name fact

Posted by BarryEvans on 29 March 2009 - 03:43 PM in RootsMagic 3

Remarkably, this has not happened in my family research thus far, so I am a little unsure:

If a person is registered as William George FIRTH to father FIRTH and mother GARDNER, but at the age of c. 2 years, his mother GARDNER partners (can not find marriage yet) George EVANS and therafter the child is known as George William EVANS (n.b swap in given names), how should the Alt name fact be used?

Should I give surname FIRTH and Alt name EVANS or vice versa?
The reason I ask is because if the former, in the (RM4) 'Name type' drop list there is 'Birth' suggesting (to me anyway) that I should use the latter?

Its late, the guy gives me a genealogical headache and I may have this all upside down blink.gif

#24987 Resizing Edit ToDo item

On my system if you resize a Edit ToDo Item, the 'Where do I need to do it' box does not resize and hence disappears.

#24898 Rm4 Place List

Posted by BarryEvans on 28 March 2009 - 06:35 AM in RootsMagic 3

This thread got a bit hijacked... so to get back on topic

I have found that Online map/Live Map Search will not find ANY of my places (imported from RM3) which have coordinates in them. RM3 does. RM4 will find street addresses (for example on the same street, same address format) if there are a] no coordinates, b] its in Live Map Search's rather limited database (compared to Google).

Hence, without even touching Place details (with its known inadequacies) it seems that RM4 has gone backwards and we are left with less function than RM3?

Anyone else found this?

#24853 RM4 housekeeping- storage locations for multimedia files

Posted by BarryEvans on 27 March 2009 - 02:20 PM in RootsMagic 3

I've had a look through archives via search and this has been discussed before, but I thought it might be appropriate to just check with others on 'best practice' with RM4 and seek more experienced users advice.

All of my genealogical data (multimedia files, letters etc) is stored in a set of subdirs according to predominant SURNAMES off a master subdir called C:\DATA\GENEALOGY. (Syn of 'My Documents\genealogy' in MS's horribly dictitorial parlance). Hence I have sudirs:

(this structure is mirrored in my email client [Outlook] for emails)

If I have a file relating to a uncommon surname in my tree, then I'll put it in the 'nearest' common surname. E.g. If I have a picture of a non-blood relative Harry FALCON who married in to my JONES line (poor dear blink.gif ), he gets stuck in the JONES subdir.

Plus I have some common utility subdirs, e.g.

This is simple (so I understand it!), but I fear it may not stand the test of time and database expansion? If for example a new SURNAME starts to get a lot of files associated with it, I guess I create another subdir but then have to (manually?) move the links within RM4?

The other thing is that I seem to remember that when creating a website using RM3 I found that all multimedia links had to come from one subdir otherwise they did not appear? Hence some multimedia files are only in the c:\data\genealogy\pictures subdir and some are duplicated in the surname subdirs. Sometimes I don't know where to go looking!

In short, it has the making of a dog's dinner, so I would welcome anyones advise on this before it beomes a car crash unsure.gif

#24787 Today button in RM4 calendar

Posted by BarryEvans on 27 March 2009 - 06:51 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

QUOTE(Laura @ Mar 27 2009, 01:37 PM) View Post

In RM 40.1.0, when I open a ToDo to edit it, and click on the calendar icon, the calendar opens on today's date. I click on Select or hit Enter on the keyboard, and today's date is entered in the Date box.

This works for a new ToDo or new entry in to one of the Date fields (started / last worked / completed), but if you edit an existing date (for example the 'last worked'), then it just shows that date, with no indication of today or a button to jump to today. This is not how it worked in RM3 and I can't understand why it was dropped in RM4?

#24774 Today button in RM4 calendar

Posted by BarryEvans on 27 March 2009 - 04:54 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

What happened to the 'today' button in the RM4 calendar? When updating a 'date last worked on' ToDo entry, it no longer defaults to today and/or does not have a today button.

Sigh, the ToDo function seems to have been effectively forgotten in the RM4 re-write and has -IMHO- gone backwards. It should be such an integral part of computer-based research (e.g. links to correspondence etc), but as is in RM4, its little more than a pale imitation of a already long overlooked and undeveloped function.

Sorry, sometimes its hard to disguise my disappointment sad.gif

#24773 Selecting the correct RM4 source template

Posted by BarryEvans on 27 March 2009 - 04:05 AM in Discussion

Forgive me if this has been covered before and because I am only starting to get to grips with the new plethora of source templates available in RM4, but as always, I'd like to start off on the right foot...

I don't (yet) have a copy of Elizabeth Shown Mills' 'Evidence Explained'. It now seems to be an almost essential purchase if you are to use RM4 source templates correctly? In the meantime I'd like to enter a few new key sources that I have just obtained (you know, the once a year certificates that come through and finally unlock a long genealogical mystery smile.gif ). So can anyone please recommend the correct templates for:

England & Wales (certified copy of an entry of) B/M/D certificates obtained from the GRO London? (You know, the ones that cost you 7 quid!). There seem to be lots of choices for marriages and deaths especially in RM4+EE.

I'm sure there are a few others which will become apparent in the near future, but these will really help me now.

Like many others it seems, I'll wait until the dust settles (and conversion tools are written?) before I tackle long standing 'core' sources such E&W census.

#24723 RM4- bug in printing ToDo list?

Posted by BarryEvans on 26 March 2009 - 01:56 PM in RootsMagic 3

In RM4 ( if I print my ToDo list: ALL ToDos / (ToDos with a priority at least this high) Priority 1, I get priority 1 and 2 ToDos!
Similarly, if I select priorities 2, I get priorities 1, 2 and 3. And so on.

In RM3 I get -as it says and should be- just priority 1 for selecting priority 1.

Other people getting the same illogic in RM4?

#24615 Place Details

Posted by BarryEvans on 24 March 2009 - 04:43 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

QUOTE(Alfred @ Mar 20 2009, 08:43 AM) View Post

You only have to use place details if you are afraid that your place list is getting too long and detailed.

For me a major reason to use this new feature would be for when uploading GEDCOMS to online (public) family trees where place details are not necessary and possibly infringe privacy. Can't see why place list length is an issue?

Although for me splitting place (into place + place details) is a really exciting and important feature (my Geo-Genealogy nivana would be to be able to drive down a street with a GPS-enabled laptop/PDA and have it pop up saying 'Your Uncle Arthur lived here (No.88) when he joined the army' etc!), I -like many other existing users it seems- will be reluctant to utilise it until it is fully developed, e.g place details editable from place list, sources for place details, semi-automated transfer/split from single place name to place + place detail etc. As is, the 'rewards' just don't justify the effort required to convert the data.

#24606 Modifyimg Place List Names

Posted by BarryEvans on 23 March 2009 - 04:00 PM in RootsMagic 3

QUOTE(Alfred @ Mar 10 2009, 03:52 PM) View Post

Here is the procedure I used:
Go to the Lists - Place list
highlight the place you need to edit.
Click the Print button and set the options to print All events at a single place (your place should be listed)
Generate report.
SAVE it to a text file, named something like TEMP-Place
Open the file in NotePad or WordPad or any small text editor. (I use Note Tab light)
Now, go back to RootsMagic and edit each of these people to get the place to read "City, County, England" or whatever and put the address, "234 Palmer Street" in the place details

Then go through the place list again, find any other places using the same "City, County, England", like a cemetery, church or school and do the same with each of them, (If you use the same temporary text file name you wont have a bunch of them messing up the hard drive.)
RootsMagic 4 doesn't seem to merge places automatically, so you will have to merge the several "City, County, England" entries in the place list after you have them all done, by highlighting one, clicking the merge button and then putting a check mark before any you want to merge.

It is going to be a long, drawn out process. You want to make a backup every once in a while and don't do too many at a setting or your fingers are likely to acquire a mind of their own.
(Or, is it that your mind wanders to somewhere else? blink.gif )

But, the wish behind it was to shorten the place list. This will do it, although, I don't know if it is worth the effort.

I believe it is quicker (but possibly riskier) if you print the list (for reference when altering each and every fact for each and every occurence/person.. yawn) and then modify (trim) the place name first from the place list. This saves you having to:
1. Modify the place name in individual facts (you'll just need to type the place details once and then select from list for every other occurence)
2. delete the original now redundant place name from the place list

But gosh, this is going to be a VERY tedious task sleep.gif
IMHO this new (much needed) major development of RM4 (splitting place names in to place and place details) should only be implemented IF place details are also editable from the place list. Otherwise the logic is incomplete and errors will inevitably creep in when trying to tackle the long dull process described above.

#23858 BMD only GEDCOM export

Posted by BarryEvans on 05 February 2009 - 12:29 PM in RootsMagic 3

kbens0n Thanks.... that worked, but...

... GROAN, what a tedious excercise. (Although I used a duplicate file to switch off all the fields and hence saved myself the trouble of having to restore them). Its still not ideal because all parts of the place are still included, e.g. Number, Street, Suburb, Town, City, County, Country from my address field rather than juts a basic Town or City ncessary for online. Like I said, I've been on the dark side of the RM moon for 2 years, but hard to believe this has not arisen before...

The need to have a function to quickly export of basic BMD year/place GEDCOM for each person in database (or selected) for use in online public family trees.

I have not faced this problem before because the last time I fed my GEDCOMS in to sites such as Genesreconnected, they only recognised BMD fields. But now, sites like myheritage seem to recognise all facts/events.

Over to Wish List perhaps? I see RM4 is just around the e-corner?

#23856 BMD only GEDCOM export

Posted by BarryEvans on 05 February 2009 - 10:57 AM in RootsMagic 3

Thanks kbenON

Tried that. But it either exports ALL facts (with date, place, date+place, year etc) or NO facts at all for each person.

Still can't work out how to filter out all facts for everyone in database EXCEPT year+place of BMD?

#23854 BMD only GEDCOM export

Posted by BarryEvans on 05 February 2009 - 10:15 AM in RootsMagic 3

Thanks John,

My understanding is that this filters facts/events from only LIVING people? I want to filter everyone.

#23852 BMD only GEDCOM export

2 years away and I'm rusty....sorry...

How do I remove all non BMD facts/events from all persons in my database during a GEDCOM export?

I want to import a bare-knuckes GEDCOM in to myheritage dot com
