#2336 Family Origins 4.1a

Posted by diamondk on 05 August 2004 - 06:54 AM in Family Origins

Having used various versions of Family Origins and now RootsMagic, I would say upgrading to RootsMagic is definately the way to go. Family Origins is no longer available and RootsMagic is so much better, it is well worth the ugrade.

#1987 How would most of you enter this in roots

Posted by diamondk on 14 July 2004 - 08:29 AM in RootsMagic 3

I would add 2 marriage and 2 divorce facts as well as a note.

#1960 Editing Reports

Posted by diamondk on 13 July 2004 - 08:55 AM in RootsMagic 3

Pleas se the thread at http://www.rootsmagi...p?showtopic=533. You need to turn off the viewing of hidden text in whatever word processor you are using before creating an index and printing.

#1940 Multiple spouses

Top left corner of the window, there is Spouses: # down arrow. Click on the down arrow and select the spouse.

#1772 Date Calculator

Posted by diamondk on 04 July 2004 - 08:03 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

Are you talking about the main edit person screen? It is available when editing individual facts.

#1703 Printing Rich Text Files

Posted by diamondk on 30 June 2004 - 03:59 AM in RootsMagic 3

You can do limited editing of .pdf files using Adobe Exchange but it is very limited. It does not work as a word processor.

#1688 Printing Rich Text Files

Posted by diamondk on 29 June 2004 - 12:53 PM in RootsMagic 3

What program are you using to view/edit your RTF? If you are using MSWord, you can go into Tools>Options>View and turn off Formatting marks>Hidden text, then create your index and it should match up.

#1647 Backtracking

Posted by diamondk on 28 June 2004 - 05:16 AM in RootsMagic 3

Try tools>Back or <ctrl-left arrow>. They work as a back-up.

#1603 pdf files

Posted by diamondk on 26 June 2004 - 05:09 AM in RootsMagic 3

You can link to the .pdf files using multimedia. Since they are not text files, you cannot, to the best of my knowledge, copy them directly into the notes or sources. One way would be to add census facts and add multimedia files to those facts.

#1536 FO to Roots Magic

Posted by diamondk on 20 June 2004 - 06:08 AM in Family Origins

We switched from FO 10.0 to RM and have been very happy. We have never wanted to go back! biggrin.gif

#1494 Web site

Posted by diamondk on 18 June 2004 - 07:31 AM in RootsMagic 3

Can you help us out with what kind of web site, pedigree, book? What names were not listed and what relationships are they?

#1446 SEARCH

Genealogy.com for one would be a nice addition.

#1330 Is it possible to add new source types?

Posted by diamondk on 08 June 2004 - 08:03 AM in RootsMagic 3

You don't have to use the source wizard. You can, with a little effort, create your own source by typing it directly into the program and by-passing the source wizard.

#1299 Birth "unknown date" feature

Posted by diamondk on 07 June 2004 - 07:28 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

We agree, either make the birth "date unknown" an option or remove it. If we want our reports to say "date unknown" we will put it into the database. We spent considerable time removing the "unknowns" from our database and really don't want the program to put them back in with no options.

#1262 A Minor Problem

Posted by diamondk on 05 June 2004 - 08:00 AM in RootsMagic 3

When creating a book with RM publisher, if you have created chapters with narrative reports and go back and change the Report type for a chapter, e.g. from “Descendants – Modified register (Record) format” to “Descendants – Register format”, the Title of report changes from “Descendants of John Doe” to Descendants of “. You then have to retype the name of the individual for the Chapter title. This is a fairly minor problem, but something to be aware of and possibly fixed in some future update.

#1122 Photos in linked to the database

Thank you!!

#1112 Photos in linked to the database

Posted by diamondk on 29 May 2004 - 08:55 AM in RootsMagic 3

Is there a way to list all of the pictures/scrapbook items/links included in a database, preferably with the links listed? It would be very useful for moving a database from one computer to another when you have not been careful how you stored the photos in relation to RootsMagic, etc. We are cleaning up our database and it is a considerable effort to find all the photos, etc. included in it. sad.gif

#1109 printing people list

Posted by diamondk on 29 May 2004 - 05:31 AM in RootsMagic 3

You can use reports>lists>individual for everyone in the database. You can also use reports>lists>duplicates and choose the attributes you want to match.

#1057 Place Format

Posted by diamondk on 27 May 2004 - 08:02 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

I cannot speak for all midwest or eastern states but my experience with Michigan is townships are not quasi-governmental bodies; They are fully functioning government bodies. Also, in Louisiana, parishes are fully functional governmental bodies, in this case, taking the place of counties. I again make the request that the the option of "freeform" place identification be kept as the primary method of adding places.

#1053 RM2 Pedigree Chart

Posted by diamondk on 27 May 2004 - 04:32 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

Would still like to see the preparer's information as an option on pedigree charts. There appears to be no way to not include it which is causes problems for us in publications (books). sad.gif

#1032 RM V2

Posted by diamondk on 25 May 2004 - 01:49 PM in RootsMagic 3

I have no problem installing over the current version but I am going to keep a safe copy of the GEDCOM somewhere beside our hard disk.

#822 Photo Quality

Posted by diamondk on 12 May 2004 - 07:30 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

We would like to see RM improved to provide “what you see is what you get” in terms of photos. After some experimenting, we found that if you link to photos that have varying dpi quality, the ones with the higher dpi show up with lower quality on the screen than those with lower dpi. It is bad enough that we did not want to print the scrapbook with the high dpi photos after viewing them on screen. When we did print the scrapbook with the high dpi photos, we were pleasantly surprised to see the quality of the results. As a matter of fact, the higher dpi photos have a slightly higher quality than the lower ones when printed. We also notice a lesser degradation of quality on the screen when we print high dpi photos to a pdf but the resultant printed pages come out the same as printing directly from RM. In contrast, we tried inserting the same pictures into MSWord. That resulted in a true depiction on screen of what would be printed. If anyone is interested in seeing this phenomenon, we have the three pictures in progressive quality (300, 150, 72 dpi) we can share.

Having said all of that, we find RM to be a great program and we would recommend it to anyone. Looking forward to receiving Version 2.0!

#763 Wish

Posted by diamondk on 11 May 2004 - 04:07 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

Version 2.0 has significant enhancements to the book publisher including Cover Page, Title Page, TOC, Copyright Page, Dedication Page, Acknowledgement Page, Preface, and free form pages. See http://www.rootsmagic.com/features.htm.

#669 Place Format

Posted by diamondk on 09 May 2004 - 11:24 AM in RootsMagic Wish List

It would be fine as an option. We and we're sure that many others that have large quantities of people to input would hate to loose the convenience of inputting places using the current method.

You can purchase an upgrade or a new program.
