#18670 Enhancements for the 'PUBLISHER" feature

Posted by genieron on 29 May 2007 - 05:53 PM in RootsMagic Wish List

Having just completed a rather large publishing project, I offer the following suggestions;
* Include a 'Printer Setup" function in the dialog box, just like "Reports". It's a pain to have to back clear out to get to FILE, or setup a dummy report just to set up the printer if you need to change something.
* Provide a means to copy a previous publication as so many are just like another one only different. At least be able to save "front Matter" such as "Introduction", Dedication, etc.
* It would be great to have more flexibility in design of cover page, more photos, more that 2 lines of title etc. RM is a great tool, we just want it to be even better. thx, ron

#18621 RM publisher output to .rtf files for editing

Posted by genieron on 22 May 2007 - 08:22 PM in RootsMagic 3

I may have just duplicated your last reply. Sorry! one issue at a time.

1') Yes the problem of not getting RM publisher to complete a document seems the same as Larry's. So I unchecked in properties so the .rtf report would just create a file. The error messages occur as RM publish is running as I have not yet passed the file on to MSword to be converted. No other program eccept RM is running eccept "autostart stuff". How do I change Windows Virtual Memory if this is the issue?

2.) I understand the index issue with rtf reports once they are completed.

3.) The "missing" pictures are "present" in the regular reports from either reports or publish out to "printer/screen", the trees shown in RM and the multimedia lists. They are in a RootsMagic/pictures dir.

4.) Didn't understand the comment re: reports folders. Was this regarding the "invisible" .rtf files I found with Widows Explorer?

5.) My comments re: putting out a PDF file from either "reports" or "publisher" are because they are repaginated but I am unaware of a way to not index the regular report and THEN have ADOBE re-index based on its pagination. I thought the idea of the PDF format was to be able to transport a report or publication to a media which allows one print, email, etc with a "universal" format. As in my case I planned to take my PDF output BOOK to kinko so they could print duplicate copies for me.

I hope this is more clearly stated and thanks for your patients. Should mention I am using a XP not VISTA, 2 gig RAM, 2.?? processing speed, About 30 G free space on HD, database of 4100+ individuals, the "book" I am stiving for is around 150 pages. Must I break it up into Vol. 1, 2, etc?
thx

#18620 RM publisher output to .rtf files for editing

It might have been better to keep this on the same thread as the original post, since it is still the same problem. Do you mean the original message from Larry Oats about not being able to finish the publisher report?
That is quite likely a problem with shortage of memory. Do you have the Windows Virtual memory set large enough? Even then, sometimes it is too slow or something and you still get the out of memory error.

RTF Report, to Word will probably be paged differently than the Screen/Printer output because Word probably has different margin settings. And, if the codes are showing when you do the index, the pagination will be off in the printed output.

Pictures? If you get only an icon, then the picture cannot be found, it probably won't show up in that person's multimedia listing either.

Publish and report versions will show up in the Printouts folder if you have set the Folders option for RootsMagic. About the only thing that goes in the reports folder is the template for Custom reports, not the finished reports.

The same here as before, the pages may slip a bit because of margins, picture size differences etc. Each kind of report should generate it's own index. You don't copy the index from one to another.
The Index in RTF must be generatd by the word processor. The codes you see are the Index markers, and are used by the word processor to INSERT the index.

#18618 RM publisher output to .rtf files for editing

Posted by genieron on 22 May 2007 - 02:55 PM in RootsMagic 3

In refuring to prior posts from genieron; I disabled the auto open of MS Word and regenerated the book. Got to page 8 of book, which is actually first page of first report, (chapter), and RM stopped with OUR REALLOC "Ran out of memory" OK? Pressed OK and then got FLUSH RTF LINE "Ran out of memory" OK? Pressed OK and RM hangs up with MS message that RM has a problem and needs to close. So it did. Nothing else was running on my machine at the time.??
Next I went back to "Report" and generated the chapter one data by its self. IT Worked until I printed it IN msWORD and found that pagination as generated by MS word did not match to text pages as generated by RM. ??? The wierd text, etc, did not print as promised but some spacing is thown off. No biggie, but I get only one chapter at a time and no "front matter" for my book.
Another problem, in both "Publish" and "report" versions, some pictures did not print except for a 1/4" thumbnail. As I recall this an issue as to where I have some stored, right?
An other issue...neither attemp at putting out to .rtf let me know that a file had been created. I actually found BOTH the files from the aborted RM publisher attemp and the file from the report only, out under Rootsmagic directory when I went into Windows Explorer! go figure!!
If you are still there... Another issue...Having given up on .rtf output I went to .pdf knowing that I still had no way to edit it but wonderd if it would work with the "book". It did, perfectly I thought until I looked at the pagination. IT IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT RM CREATED AND THUS THE INDEX DOESN'T JIVE!!!
Hope we can resolve these issues as I must next create a "privatized' database for seriuos publication, CD's (which seems to work well) and then its' on to the internet. THX Ron

Thx John, See my reply to Alfred above. I see what you tried to do. My folks are so intertwined that it may be impossible. Is it acceptable to publish them this way?? Ron

#18603 Multiple Narrative Reports in RM publisher

Posted by genieron on 21 May 2007 - 08:38 PM in RootsMagic 3

Thx, Got your point, BUT with so many brothers and sisters m. sisters and brothers + cousins m. cousins I have not a tree but a globe, they are so intertwined. Each generation is interwoven. (deep in the hills of KY!) I tried to put the book out as a .rtf to I could try editing it but rather wierd stuff, like, {ndnndjhjj...--} at each person or event that would have to be edited out. Did I do something wrong when converting it?

#18593 Multiple Narrative Reports in RM publisher

Posted by genieron on 21 May 2007 - 06:00 PM in RootsMagic 3

I am using RMPublisher to complile a family History. I have set up the book with Narrative reports of Decendents from each major branch as chapters in the book. Now when I get down each tree a few generations I get a lot of duplication printed in the end report. Is it normal genealogy publishing protocal to print these duplications? If now how do I keep one branch in its main ancestorial root and get rid of the dups? Thx

#16255 Importing source data, (ie census) from on-line data bases

Posted by genieron on 03 November 2006 - 12:50 PM in RootsMagic 3

QUOTE(Alfred @ Nov 3 2006, 12:00 AM) View Post

When you download a GEDCOM file from something like Ancestry, Family Search or something, when you then import it to RootsMagic, you are asked if you want to add a source to all people or all facts, choose your preference. ang give it a distinctive name. You cannot enter everything you would like there, but you can later fo to the Source list and deit the source to say just what you want it to say.
You may then want to go to each individual citing that source and enter a bit of citation detail.

I think it is best to import each new GEDCOM file to a new, empty database, clean it up, fix the place names and dates before importing, maybe dragging and dropping into your main database where you may have some merging to do.

(Note: I don't put much stock in names -- my middle initial is D. Does anyone remember Dennis DimWit? biggrin.gif )

MANY THANKS for your timely responce. That tip helps me from digging the hole deeper.

#16241 Importing source data, (ie census) from on-line data bases

Are you asking how to import the data?
Or, how to enter the source telling where the data came from?

Thx, I may have figured it out. It seems I must look for databases from on-line, which I can download as a GEDCOM then import it, Right? I have created, ( by mistake) two master databases which have differing sources. I was trying to match/merge to create a new Master with all sources properly associated to data. I seem to be digging the hole deeper. Any suggestions? (NOTE the 'genie..." part of my nickname does not stand for "genius". Another way to put it.. The sources each exist on the two files. I am trying to get all on the preferred master file. thx

#16210 Importing source data, (ie census) from on-line data bases

Posted by genieron on 31 October 2006 - 11:45 AM in RootsMagic 3

Im am migrating from FTM, can anyone provide me a means of importing and creating source info from on- line data bases such as Rootsweb, Ancestry, etc. into my new RM database. It appears that RM has much more power once I get it imported. Have thought of proceeding with FTM then importing that DB in RM. I hope there is a better way. thx

#14706 Safely DELETE old RM files & databases

Posted by genieron on 22 July 2006 - 07:50 PM in RootsMagic 3

Can you recommend a "SAFE" way to delete several old MASTER and BACKUP files from the program? I hesitate to just go into MS Explorer and start deleting just on old date or some criteria. But the computer is getting quite cluttered.thx ohmy.gif

#14310 Chapter Titles in PUBLISHER

Posted by genieron on 27 June 2006 - 03:34 PM in RootsMagic 3

Help please! I am trying to use the "PUBLISH" feature to create a book of reports. The titles for each report are not appearing at generation time. I only get the overall "heading/footer enties. What have I missed.

Next issue! Is there a way to get more flexibility when designing a cover page? THX
