When you click on a group and add a person then click ok and close the persons file, why is it happening that when you go back to that person it is not clicked onto the group even when you do this several times

However when you create a new group and add the same person it works

Renee thanks for the reply. This group has others listed in it. I have used the data base tools but this does not fix the problem even after shutting down the program. I have just tried to add another person with the results of not being able to add to the list.

I even downloaded the program again but still no change.

But after doing all the above steps again it has corrected it self

You will have to recreate your groups. You could make a To-Do Item for that person and list all the groups you have for him. Then drag n drop then into a new database and make sure you create and add all the groups for them. You can import Research Logs and To-Do Items into a new database if you want to import that instead of a person. 

 

There is an issue with creating blank groups that is on the development list. Granted that needs to be fixed, but right now you wouldn't want to create a bunch of blank groups just to have the list. When you make a group you want to have at least one person it in.

Renee, I only dragged my file into a blank file last night, and after my work for the last 8 hours today found that the groups were empty and found this message....woe. Has Bruce found a way to overcome this in 8 or am I to stay on 7???/

Renee this problem has returned.

I added an existing person in my tree to an existing group where there are several people already on this group. After going back to check he was not linked to the group. I carried out all of the previous things like reloading Roots magic, Data base tools, backup, close program, but still will not accept adding this person to the group.

Something must be causing this problem and I now wonder how many others are not listed to groups where I have added them.

 

This is what I do.

click on the person

open edit person

click on groups, this opens quick groups

tick the group I want to attach this person to

click ok

close edit person file

click on groups above index

click on the group........he is not there ??????

You can submit a ticket but we would still need to know if you are working with a group that you recently created or one that could have potentially been left blank at some point in the past. Try creating a new group to replace the one that the person is not saving in. You can color-code all the people in the current group to use that as a filter in adding to the new group. You may wish to do this with all your groups to rule out any issue with groups that may have been left blank at some point. 

Renee this was a group created a long time ago that had others in the group already.

I have created a new group and shifted all the people into the new group and the original person is included and holding.

Will watch in future to make sure it does not happen again.

I'm under a confidentiality agreement and can only confirm what has been stated publicly on RM8. So, I am unable to comment on this. In the video below you can see blank groups being created. Using Drag n Drop, etc has not been publicly discussed.

When I go to print any report I get a system error Code 1722, the RPC server is unavailable.

What does this mean??

It means that something has killed your print spooler process.

 

Usually solved by a complete shutdown and restart of your computer.

Thanks Bob, as when I opened the computer today it was fixed. Any idea the cause of this?

Kinda sorta. If you have not checkmarked the Use external browser checkbox (above the Pick a Search Provider button) then FamilySearch complains about RoostsMagic default use of an Internet Explorer-based browser tool. Do the checkmarking and it will use your default Windows browser (which sounds like Google Chrome from your mention) .

Can you please explain your first line above and where in which program are you discussing. Regards

Rootsmagic uses a programmable (embeddable) version of the Internet Explorer browser engine (by default) for its display of web-based info for the WebSearch tab results. In the course of program upgrades, the ability to use an external browser (Windows default browser) was added. At some point in recent years, FamilySearch began disallowing the use of Internet Explorer (other websites still allow its use). But, in order to overcome that FamilySearch restriction, one needs to ensure the <Use external browser> checkbox is checkmarked.

This has happened to me several times following a Windows10 update. I notice it right away because text being pasted to RM shows unicode characters. When I recheck the "use plain text" option the text will then paste correctly. I'm not sure what is causing the option to be unchecked. FYI for what it is worth.

Yes, there's a problem with RootsMagic access to Family Search.  It's 9:50 Pacific time on 9/29/2020.  Family Search is up and running when accessed from outside RM, but from within RM I also get the "Unable to connect to the internet" message.  RM is 7.6.4.0.  There's no way to get out of the lock on the system, I find I must go to Windows task manager and cancel RM.  It's probably a temporary condition, but I thought I should post an "I have this problem too" so that Mr. Hayward doesn't think he's alone.  Most frustrating.  An earlier message in this thread said something about a file with over 30,000 users.  I don't even have 10,000 so that has nothing to do with it.

After checking yesterday I just looked now and it is unchecked again. So I checked it again, ran database tools, saved file and closed program.

On opening file again and looked and it is still checked. Who knows what is causing this.

That would be part of the Windows theme you have selected. You can do into your settings and change it. 

But is there just a way to turn it off in RM not all other Windows based sounds in other places

No. RootsMagic does not assign sounds to actions and thusly has no settings for such.

#98531 Possible bug in opening edit screen

1. Set the left hand column to "Index"

2. Select the "People" view on the main screen and choose a named group to display. Click on any member of the group.

3. Return to the index and double-click on any person who is NOT part of the named group.

 

The edit screen which opens is not the person on whom you double-clicked but the person worked on in the named group.

 

I think this is a bug; one should be able to open the edit screen of the person selected from the index.

Not a problem, as it worked for me. When I did that the persons edit screen opened.

The places of birth and death occupy considerable length, especially if I insist on adding the word "County" for disambiguation and call the country United States of America. This means the end of the line gets pushed off the screen, to the right and I cannot reach the button for FamilySearch. How about allowing these fields to be split 

 

Minneapolis, Hennepin County,

    Minnesota, United States of America

 

to occupy less width.

Why not just increase the width of the right part of the screen by shifting the join to the left.

On the first question and being in transition with both programs I'm not sure comment would have any great value. Personally as a large database user and comparing FH6 to RM7 I have found FH6 superior in terms of filtering, reporting and mapping and also that enviable Ancestry style pedigree view.

 

I don't know where the hundreds of beta testers are but we can only hope they are not just cruisers and doing a good job. As for features we are still not clear on exactly what RM8 will bring to the table so I await both FH7 and RM8 to decide the future of my research over the next several years.

I only hope the time spent on these program updates, is spent on fixing the many problems and include adding the many basic wish lists that have been requested..

Just basic things like merging facts, removing unused places in one movement, unrelated bloodline connections Etc Etc that people would all use.

Most times adding new features create many hours of design, but in the end will only be used by a few. Why do this.

Like any program, most people only use a small percentage of the features, some only using the program to store names.

Program updates need to be released quickly including wish list fixes to stop the natives becoming restless.

People would I feel be prepared to pay for new updates on a regular basis and not wait for years and find wish lists remain.

The longer this goes on the more competitors will make sales to unsatisfied customers and restless natives.

Restless native are the worst advertising. Happy natives create more customers by recommendation.

I am not a beta tester but I would expect that RM beta testers are not permitted to comment about RM8 or even that they are a beta tester, especially they cannot post in forums such as this.

Totally and fully understand the responsibility of a beta tester, that is not at question.
