I wonder if it can be done outside of Roots Magic with something like Sequel

Now only thing I have to do is learn how to use SQlite Tools!  

I have several PDF files in my scanned docs folder which I would like to tag and associate with several people in my database.  For instance, I have a "group" labeled "U.S. Presidents".  I have a PDF file explaining the Presidential $1 coin series.  Is there a way to easy tag that PDF file to all individuals in the U.S. Presidents group?

 

 

I will learn to use SQLite first!  I miss the good ole days with PAF with all the different 3rd party add-ons:

I love Roots Magic, but I do miss PAF. 

The spell checker in notes works very well.

 

Where is the "file" stored on my computer.

 

Since I use a laptop and desktop, I backup and transfer over my RM file and scanned docs as I switch computers. 

 

I would also like to copy over the spell check file and any other files that I should. 

 

For instance, is there a file for layout, colors, preferences, etc that I can copy to keep RM looking the same on both computers?

CTL-F then ALT-R is the closest I can find for a shortcut.

Is there a hot key to bring up a window to enter a RIN ?

Many times it's easier to search for a person using their number, rather than searching through the names.

Is it also a way to put that as an icon on the menu bar?

Excellent comments.  It would be great if I could run a program which would create a Ref # fact for everyone in the database, copying their RIN number to that fact.  But with close to 70,000 individuals, this is nothing I'm going to be able to do manually.

My properties shows I have 68,411 individuals; however, my next RIN number is 76,260.  I have a lot of old deleted RIN numbers from various clean ups.

 

I don't want to create a GEDCOM export and create a new file as I use my existing RIN number for ID purposes.  For instance, I list my media files according to person's RIN number.  For instance,  I am RIN 1and list my media files like this:   000001_Reverdy_Orrell_birth (etc).  If I export to GEDCOM and create a new RM file, I believe I loose the current assigned numbers eventually, correct?

 

I thought that by running database tool / clean phantom records would free up those now unused numbers, but that isn't the case.

 

Any ideas on what to do?  

 

It really isn't a major problem, but it is something I've been wondering about.

Reports / Print a Report / Lists / On This Day List creates a nice report of family events for any date.

 

Here is a sample line from the report for Oct 6:

 

1755: Birth: Elizabeth Gassaway - 1796, All Hallow's, Anne Arundel County, Maryland

 

Is it possible to modify this report to add their relationship to the root person in the database?

I accidentally created a person with the name "Reb3ekah", then found out later.

 

Can a check or flag be put into place to pop up a warning block if you add a number or special character in the Given or Surname field?

 

I believe that technically, Kings, etc would list their "number" as a suffix

Does anyone create separate "Fact Types" for Kings, Queens, Prince, Princess, etc or just use one fact type such as the standard "Title (Nobility)?

 

 

I have a custom fact for WikiTree.com and for Wikipedia.com.

I drop the full web link in the description field.

I also do a PDF file print of the page and attach that as a media page for that person.

Sometimes I also copy and paste the text from the page into my notes.

Might not be the best method but it works well for me.

I find that printing web pages as PDF files and attaching them as media files works well.

Excellent.  Yes, I have quite a few people in my database.  Creating a "group" within RM is much better than a printout.

Is there a way to create a report (or a group) which contains all of my "end of line" ancestors?

I was able to mark & create a group of my direct line ancestors.  However, when I select Unmark Group, I don't see an appropriate option for selecting those ancestors without a parent.  I seem to be missing something

Thanks Renee & Tom.  The last comment about unmarking number of sets of parents to greater than zero nailed it.  This is very helpful as a "group".

 

Below is the entire sequence that I use for others who might be interested in creating a group of "end of line" direct ancestors

 

Go to Groups

New

Select self in checkbox

Mark Group

Ancestors of Highlighted Person

(Increase number of generations)

OK (This creates a group consisting of all direct line ancestors in database

Unmark Group

Clear People by Data Fields

Number of sets of parents - greater than - 0 (zero)

OK (You then get a notice of the number of people who have been "unmarked" or deleted from the group

OK

OK

Give Group A Name (I use Reb - End of Line - Ancestors), if I am the starting person

Is it possible to set up a routine where your "To Do List" can be automatically emailed to you at specific intervals (daily, weekly, etc)

Currently I'm adding mostly "Files", not "Images" to my media database.

 

I have to change the Media Type from Image to File every time.

 

Is there an option to change defaults with Media Type?

This would be great, especially if there was a column showing relationship to a specific person. Listing of birth, death, and marriage dates with person's name and RIN, plus relationship. Even if cant be programmed with startup, having a report like that is something I would really make use of
