I just checked. The difference was 8490 for RootsMagic vs. 828 for PAF. Of that number half the PAF files are source files since PAF does not handle sources as well as RootsMagic IMHO. There are other advantages to RootsMagic if you are not working with a huge database. With PAF, it takes me a long time to manually break down the names list since PAF puts all in one list which is impossible with 33,000+ names. RootsMagice breaks down the list and provides an index to the names. I have to do it manually which in my case is now an all day job.

As I said, no one program can be everything for everybody at all times which is why I use 2 different programs. I would say that RootsMagic would fill all my needs if it were not for the huge number of files generated. Perhaps we could put that on a wish list for those of us with a huge database. Otherwise, RootsMagice is the easiest to work with and fills all my needs.

Anyway, I am a happy camper and my problem is solved and I do appreciate the help!

Thanks! I told you I was being dense. Yes, I was still using 1.0 but just bought 2.0 online and just waiting for it to arrive.

You are right that RootsMagic does a very nice job with web pages. I used FO previously until the database got so large. My ONLY objection to using RootsMagic for my web pages is the number of files generated - it runs into the thousands simply because of the size of my database. For the normal user, it would certainly do a great job and do it quickly and easily. I used FO until the database got to about 15,000 before going to another program for the web pages.

No one program can be all things under all situations but that does not change the fact that I have been a loyal user from day 1 and will continue to be a loyal user now that I know I have a very simple work around for my little problem. IMHO, RootsMagic is the easiest and most straight forward of any program to use which explains why I wanted a work around for my little problem.

Thanks for a superior product and the great support!

I know I am being dense but when making my gedcom from RootsMagic, I do not see an option below "sources" in order to eleminate the extra lines. I should have said I have Gedcom Explorer so hopefully that may provide a way to get rid of the extra lines. I have gone through my current project in PAF to manually delete the extra lines for all 1300 + souces but would love to hear that I do not have to do it the next time.

Thanks for your patience and help. I really do love to work in RootsMagic and really hate to work in PAF (except for generating the web pages). You are correct that RootsMagic does make nice web pages but I also do a lot of formatting on my pages and even with 1 gig of memory, I can not do a search and replace after the pages are done because of the number of pages generated with a database of 33,000 names.

Thanks,

Nola

Alfred,

You are correct. As much as I love to work in RootsMagic, I have continued to use PAF 5.2 for my web pages. I will try your work around and see how it comes out. Thanks so much for letting me remain the loyal user that I am.
