Help! Upgrade from v2 to v3

25 December 2005 - 09:52 PM

I've been happily using version 2 of RootsMagic for some time, and a family member bought me the version 3 upgrade as a Christmas present.

I just used it to upgrade, but after restarting it is now in "demo mode" and blocking access to all my genealogy data. I did not remove version 2 before running the program, and install prompts indicated that it would install over version 2 and preserve my data. So I thought there should be no problem as I have the full v2 registered product and I expected the v3 upgrade to create a v3 fully registered product.

However, now I'm in this "demo" mode, and it is prompting me to enter product registration information to unlock the product features. The instructions say to look inside the CD case for the registration number, but there is nothing in the case or on the CD. I looked in vain in my v1 and v2 CD cases as well in case my old product registration number was there and still good, but no luck!

My family member has the online email from the order purchase, but no product registration was in the email.

So I'm at a loss as to how to get a product registration number to get full access to my data again. Help! I'm planning a genealogy excursion this week, and I'll need my data...

Fact Type order is important

31 July 2005 - 03:57 PM

I've noticed that fact types are fairly "independent" and there doesn't seem to be a way to specify the relationship between them if it is important. This can affect the content quality when generating a report. For example, I've noticed in several of my reports that the "Burial" fact will precede the "Death" fact for a person... and the report then has that the person was buried on a date at a cemetery... then the person died on a date at another location. The order seems strange when you read it.

In experimenting, the only way I've found to correct this issue is to remove the Burial fact (with all sources, etc.!) and then re-add it after the Death fact. Not exactly a fun thing to do... wink.gif

Improvement of Automatic Report Formatting

31 July 2005 - 03:51 PM

Sometimes I've noticed that the automatic report generation (e.g. the descendant report in modified register format) will produce reports that look a little strange due to including photos and other items. The extra photo will "force" information in a layout around it that looks a little strange to readers. Of course, a person can modify it manually afterwards, but this can be difficult if 1) the document is very long, and 2) a PDF is generated at the user does not have Adobe Acrobat.
