I d/l the trial version of RM4 and when I try to import a GEDCOM from RM3 or try to create a new database, I get an error message:

RootsMagic cannot create file
C:\Program Files\RootsMagic 4\mast.rmgc
Please make sure you entered a legal file name

Just open the Trial and click File Import and let the program find your RM3 file, which it will convert in its entirity and you will have everything you had in RM3 now in the RM4 format. It will not harm the RM3 file. I wouldn't use the GEDCOM approach you will loose some of your photo and document information etc.

The key given to public beta testers will work until April 1, even on version 4.0.1.0. We purposely wanted some overlap between the public beta period and official release so that people using the public beta would have an uninterrupted transition between the two.

Michael,

Please talk to Bruce and ask him what we are supposed to do with the Cruise Certificates he gave us so we can download the software. I tried, but there is no provision for the certificate on the sales site. Just how does he want to do that? Your help would be appreciated. Congratulations to all on the release.

Look in the RootsMagic 4 Help menu.
Search for Family Search choose it from the list.

In part it says:
In other words, Family Search isn't fully implemented by the Family Search people yet.

By the way, it isn't available to non church members who index for the New Family Search either. So even though we are helping with the project, we don't get access to it.

Keeping in mind the legalities of giving something to someone who didn't actually pay for it and therefore acquire some rights:
The old discs can be used, but the key is to keep the Registration Key away from the old discs! This means that you can give the discs away to new people; but if they want to use it past an examination time, they have to register and get their own copies!

But the best thing probably is to keep the old ones in case you have a tragic accident and lose your newer copies. That way, you'd have something to reload and build upon.

Since RM4 has an entirely new DB design, the only way you could go back to RM3 would be my making a GEDCOM.
As far as I know, Bruce only sells full install copies not upgrades. I think, if you notified RootsMagic that you intend to abandon your key and give the program to someone else, you wouldn't be violating the agreement. But you would no longer be able to install that product. Otherwise, you could give it away without the key and inform the individual they will have to buy a new key from Roots Magic. The point being you cannot give away a key without informing the issuer that you intend to give up the rights to that key.

In Windows you can add any character by holding down the ALT key and typing a 4-digit code on the NUMERIC KEYPAD. For instance upper-case C-Cedella () is entered by holding down the ALT key and typing "0199". I have the codes for the 15 most common special characters used in Spanish taped to my computer monitor. You can find the codes by opening the "character map" under accessories -> system tools.

Don,

Don't confuse European languages with unicode. You can do all the common European languages the way you describe but NOT Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hinki etc. These languages require a keyboard layout and a unicode font to operate correctly and when you are using the language you cannot simultaneously use English you must switch back to English. This can be done every other word if you want but it isn't the same as using ASCII codes. My first name Peter in Thai is ปีเตอร์ใ I need a keyboard layout and a unicode font to do that. A language with 44 consonants 27 vowels and 4 tone marks connot be done with just extra ascii. Complex I know but there are fonts on you computer right now that contain all the alphabets. Tahoma is one, MS San Serif is another. It is very helpful to have this and that's why Bruce is putting the support in RootsMagic 4. So family members names can be properly displayed. It is helpful for first generation immigrants.
