BRUCE,

PLEASE HELP!

I have been working, for years, on the data, now ready to publish. [And no, I do not want to use RTF format that doesn't include the media files!] Had old reports in RM3, then had to recreate the reports in RM4 and they look ... sorry to say ... pretty crappy.

In Topic: How to find A Shareable CD file ... on my computer

Do you have your computer set to show hidden files? The Appdata folder is hidden.

Go to Windows Help and search for hidden files. follow the directions on the help page to turn hidden files on.

Laura

Laura,

Thank you! Your recommendation worked. Found the sharable CD that was saved on my computer.

A bit curious. I used to be able to find the saved sharable CDs ... then I couldn't find them. (I didn't know Appdata folders were hidden.) Wonder how the 'show hidden file' option got turned off.

None the less ... thanks much.

Thanks all.

Alfred. I am using Vista and cannot find the file path you described. Is there an extension (*.???) that I could use to search.

In Topic: Gedcom from Ancestry.com won't load

10 January 2010 - 10:26 PM

Laura,

Thanks for your response.

I tried downloading a gedcom from Ancestry.com World tree. I chose to save a 6 generation descendant gedcom using CLRF, 1351 individuals. After I saved, I tried to import into RM vs. 4.06; RM freezes even tho I have waited up to 15 minutes to allow the program to 'do its thing'.

I have never been given an option to "download Open with Abiword", don't know Abiword and have no interest (at this point) in opening a gedcom into a word processing program.

All I want to do is save a gedcom from Ancestry to my HD and import into RM.

*****

The way I got it to work. I called a friend who has used RM v3 and v4 and sent him the link to the oldest person I wanted in the descendant gedcom on Ancestry.

My friend had to import into RM v3, create a gedcom, then e-mail me the gedcom.
- He was also unable to import into RM v4.
- Note. When he saved the Ancestry gedcom, he had the option of saving to his HD or opening the gedcom in RM. I was never given this option, on my computer.
- I had not considered using RM v3.

Upon receipt, I imported the gedcom into RM v3. Then, I imported the RM v3 file into RM v4.

My point. I have a problem, somewhere, RM v4 (software) or my computer. In the past, I had no problem downloading a gedcom from Ancestry into RM v3. Today, I have a problem ... when I am using RM v4.

My question: how to fix the problem?

Thanks,

Becky

PS I'm going to post this to the "Issues" section of the RM v4 board. Hopefully, technical support can provide a better explanation and solution for how to resolve this issue.

Becky and Janew, is it Ancestry.com World trees you are trying to download a gedcom from:

From, Ancestry.com World trees, I downloaded and saved to the hard drive a couple of gedcoms using CLRF and imported them into a new database with no problems. These were small gedcoms.

The screens to download gedcoms for Ancestry.com World trees has not been changed.

I did get an "Error importing file error" if I selected to download Open with Abiword (default). I changed Open with to Wordpad and the gedcom opened in that word processor.

I am using RM 4.0.7.1 and Firefox.

Debbie, where are you when you use click "Tree Settings" then "Export Tree"? Is it in a Family tree you have created? I can't find any Export tree or gedcom options while in Public family trees which have been created by someone else.
