So, in short, RM doesn't want Mac users.

Everything is going to depend on what each person wants: not just accuracy but importing/exporting, appearing in reports, etc. There is not universally perfect solution for all people in all situations all the time. We make judgement calls.

I think Tamura Jones offers the best foundation to start--especially if you're sharing information via GEDCOM.

So yes, I also recommend entering historically accurate place names (the name of the place at the time of the event), and to follow the city, county, state, country approach as much as is feasible. For me, YMMV, to make things as clear and accurate as possible, I use the historically accurate place then before the comma I add the contemporary county or other place name in [brackets, sometimes "now Germany" or whatever] so someone else reading it who might be less well versed in genealogy/history/family/etc. can read and understand. This approach helps me with research (sometimes things can be in both counties, eg) and it transfers via GEDcom which is important.

As a general rule, make a backup copy of your Reunion file before doing anything drastic!

Is that all in the Place field?

At present the Standardized Place Name and Abbreviated Place Name do not transfer by gedcom although I still make use of them. There have been repeated wishes for some additional fields for the likes of Historical Place Name and maybe other variations although RM needs to also provide some options and control for users to make use of them. If you are harvesting online matches I think it is important that your Place field is as recognizable as possible and probably in Englsih language.

We will have to wait and see what, if any, improvements RM8 brings to the table regarding the endless discussion and various needs for Place management.

Yes, all of that in the place name (which can get unwieldy sometimes).
I'm American and use the city, county, state, country scheme (or equivalent) in the place name and put other/more specific information in the memo field (cemetery name, actual address, ward, etc)
Reunion is still my main program (been waiting impatiently for a useable native Mac version of RM). That said, RM imported even long place names via GEDCOM (eg, "Nordenbrock [now part of Tenstedt], Amt. Cloppenburg, Prince-Bishopric of Münster, Holy Roman Empire [now Germany]"). I don't use the Standardized Place Name or Abbreviated Place Name, obviously.
Most of my place name changes are in the US (lots of former colony names [now states] or lots of formerly large counties that have been subdivided).

Natives (native Mac users) are restless.

The bridge came out years ago (we paid extra for that), then the wrapper (where Mac users don't get full functionality much less a reliable program). A native Mac was promised (a long time ago) with RM 8. RM 8 was promised in 2019. The days pass to weeks, those have passed to months with increasingly fewer short weeks left in the year...if it's not coming this calendar year, please announce that sooner rather than later. Thanks.
