I think my description was not totally complete. The usual issue with modal windows in RM is that sometimes you might be in the Edit Person screen and you need to switch briefly to the Lists->Sources screen or to the Lists-->Places screen and then back to the Edit Person screen, etc. RM's modal windows make this very difficult.

Ah! Got it. Yes, you're right, of course. I think because I tend to jot down information (old habits die hard) it is less of an issue for me - but I understand now what you mean.

Different people have different preferences. It seems to me that a very large number of RM users really like the convenience of the internal browser. But at least some RM users prefer an external browser because with an external browser you are not locked into a modal window in RM. In other words, with an external browser you can have your browser window and your RM window both really active at the same time. You don't have to exit one to get to the other, and vice versa.

I'm not sure what you mean by "exit one to get to the other" - perhaps we're talking two different functions?

I don't have to close the internal browser to work in other tabs in RM (i.e., if I'm searching for someone on a census, use the websearch tool, find the information - I can tab over to the individual and enter the data without exiting the browser or my files).

The plus to using an external browser for me would be opening multiple web-based search engines/sites/tools (say looking at Ancestry; Fold3; some other search tool) - but that's a rare occurance for me and chances are I would use both the internal and external browsers at that point in any case. I tend to keep a lot of written notes, so skipping from one to another isn't a bother.

I guess the nice thing is that we do each have our own way of plowing our furrows and - as you say - it all comes down to personal preference!

You can't do anything about the long obsolete internal browser. Maybe RootsMagic 8 will have a contemporary one.

I've not really had any issues with the internal browser until now, but I won't argue its efficacy. It's not an impossible situation, obviously - I just liked the convenience of not having to open an external browser and flip back and forth.

Thank you for the reply.
