In Topic: Slow to Load - Roots Magic Explorer

05 October 2017 - 07:05 PM

Hi.  Well, the memory sits at about 42% throughout.  When I hit the search function, the first time, the CPU pops up to 100% for about one second, then during the time period before the results are displayed, the CPU runs at between 27% and 40%, dropping back to 3-5% when the results are displayed.  The other screens report nominal activity.

As to the results of the tool that Kevin suggested, I downloaded it, tried to follow the instructions about three times, but without success.  Clearly I was not following the procedure correctly, but pretty much abandoned that idea and did not pursue that aspect further because I have already taken up considerable air time with no readily-apparent solution.

And that's my report.....   ;)  Clearly, nobody else in the forum is having such a problem.

Hi all:

Thanks for the additional suggestions.  I will look into them.  Just a couple of additional comments from me:

This particular search function of RootsMagic7 appears to be the only slow operation on this computer.  I have done the conventional check disk procedure in Windows 10.  My 1TB drive has 680GB free space.  So, I am still inclined to think that this may be more a RootsMagic issue than a system or hard disk issue.  But I do appreciate the suggestions.

So......  I uninstalled RootsMagic 7.  I emptied by Recycle bin and large downloaded files folder.  I then defragmented my c drive.  I shut down the computer.  I reinstalled the RootsMagic 7. I went  thought the database tools again, in sequence.

No improvement in the search time.

H-m-m-m.  Thanks for continuing to offer comments on this matter.  I had not experienced anything different than the lag with my program, so thought that this was perhaps 'normal'.  In checking in Task Manager, using the 'details' tab, I see that for a second or three, it says RM is running, then for a major portion of the time indicates "not responding", then the function opens.

Perhaps this means something.

I wonder what might happen if I do an uninstall and reinstall?

Hi:

Thanks for the suggestion.  I do use the tools fairly regularly, but after your note I went through them in sequence and re-booted the program.  No noticeable effect I am afraid.  It still takes about 15 seconds to produce the search screen, even if I try two or three searches in sequence.  I guess my own expectation would be that in any given session, if I have built the search index once, then it would be cached and held so as to operate more quickly with subsequent requests.
