Topics I've Started

Definition of a tree

06 December 2014 - 11:24 PM

I inadvertently copied in some people from a gedcom that I had not vetted (clicked on person and ancestors rather than person and descendants). I thought a simple solution might be to break the link between the child I wanted to keep, and the parent who led to the people I had not checked. I expected doing so would put the unlinked group of ancestors into a second tree and not show up in my original tree, but they are still there. Viewing the descendant list, there does not seem to be a second link between these groups. Why would they not be in a separate  tree?

Just want to report that even though I registered, I was locked out of the webinar because it was full.

Find all records edited on a certain date

01 December 2014 - 08:34 PM

I think I need to go back to a version of my data base saved a few days ago. Is there a way to search for all records edited on or after that date in my current database so I can manually make just selected changes to my older database?

Problems with exported gedcom

30 November 2014 - 12:43 PM

The other day I created a gedcom file from Roots Magic 7, so I could look at it on my friend's Family Treemaker while visiting. The import came up with lots of error messages, which I don't remember, but what i do know is that about 35 people that i have full names for, were listed as "noname or no name". In some cases, it knew they were male (lt blue background), but others, not. Since I've had no problem that I know of, importing gedcoms from others, I was disappointed.  I'm concerned because as I grow my database, I will want to be able to share my information with people who I've connected with. Any thoughts?

Using User Defined Fact for Media

09 November 2014 - 10:44 AM

Similar to what Jerry is doing with his To Do List fact, I created a Media Fact using person, date (for date of my possession) and description, to integrate into the person's record what I have for media. An example of a resulting sentence is: Media in the possession of Jacqueline Zegel on 9 Nov 2014, for Alice Smith includes: her divorce announcement, dated Aug 12, 1925, a letter written to her brother Robert on July 24, 1936 and her obituary, dated Oct 5, 1956. Still not sure what to do with the originals, but that's another topic. Grateful for all the ideas and help I've received; hope this helps someone!
