Reports saved as RTF are gibberish on Mac

24 November 2012 - 09:42 PM

I am having problems saving Narrative reports as RTFs. I am using a Mac with Parallels 8 and Windows 7 with RM 6. The Mac and PC share all the same folder/directory structure. That being said, this is what happens:

I can view a report in the Report Viewer just fine. I can save it as every other format that is offered except RTF. When I choose the rtf option and to view this file after it is saved, the report opens in Word Pad, but is totally blank. If I choose NOT to view it then, but still save it as a rtf, when I try to open it on my Mac side, only the first line, First Generation, is seen correctly. The rest, sometimes only 3 or 4 lines even though the file size may be 1 MB for a large report, is total gibberish.

Previously, when I used Parallels 8 under Windows XP and RM 5, the reports save correctly as rtf and can be viewed on either my Mac or PC side.

Not being a Windows user, I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. I'm running a minimal Windows 7 system..... basically just RM and Family Atlas and don't have a full word processor to handle RTFs. Is that the problem or is it something else? I'm thinking I shouldn't need a word processor, intending to open these files on my Mac side. Am I wrong? Any help to figure this out would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kathy

Customize Sentence Template - add popup of choices

23 November 2012 - 12:04 AM

I am a new user to RM and I find the practice of customizing sentence templates to be needlessly confusing with all the choices/options there are available. They make it a very powerful feature, but also tedious to do. I'd like to see some sort of a popup menu with all the choices/options in it ..... something similar to what Legacy does. That would make this feature much more useful.

How to mark a group as not living?

19 November 2012 - 10:02 PM

I feel a little dense here, but I've just starred using RM on my Mac, coming from Reunion and I can't seem to figure out how to mark a group of people and have the Living checkbox checked. Obviously I can go through and mark each one manually, but with almost 9,000 people in my database, that seems a bit much. Is it possible to mark a group of people and then have the Living checkbox automatically be checked for them? I see that I can go to the Roots Magic Explorer and do a Find ....... birth date is after 1900 and death date is blank. I click OK but nothing seems to happen. Am I expecting something that RM will not do automatically or do I just not know how to do it?

Thanks for any help on this.

Any Mac/Parallels users on this forum? Multimedia help please!

06 November 2012 - 01:05 PM

I am a Mac user trying to use RM4 via Parallels 8 on my Mac. I would very much like to use RM and update to version 5 but I am having a lot of difficulty in figuring out the media path links to my files located on the Mac side of my computer.

I made a small test file and imported it as a gedcom from Reunion 10 into RM. The multimedia links are all broken and I know from prior experience, clicking the Fix Broken Links in Tools, takes a couple of hours to go through all the files on my computer. On my normal file, I have over 900 media files linked to me genealogy data.

The media link (broken) as shown in Media Gallery is this: \~/Genealogy/Photos/Kathy's Ancestors/ANDRADE, H & C wedding.jpg

If I manually add that file into RM, the path appears as \\psf\Home\Genealogy\Photos\Kathy's Ancestors\ANDRADE, H & C wedding.jpg and the image shows up as it should.

The PSF refers to Parallels Shared Folder, the Home is the same as the tilde in the first link.

In RM under Tools/Program Options/Folders, the path for multimedia is set to \\psf\Home\Genealogy which is how it comes up after clicking the ... button.

So, if there is anyone who is successfully using RM with Parallels on their Mac, I would love to be able to pick your brain as to how I can make this work for me. Thank you very much!
