How about a Vista compatible version?

09 May 2007 - 07:38 PM

I would just like to have a version of RootsMagic that is 100% compatible with Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm getting tired of it shutting down on me right in the middle of entering data.

And P-L-E-A-S-E don't try to tell me that it already IS compatible; I know better. When you click to enter a 'Marriage' fact and a 'Birth' fact window pops up instead, that's the program messing up, not the computer.

Yes, I know there are lots of you out there running it with no problems at all. But there are also those of us who are having problems. RootsMagic support couldn't even help; they gave up. I switched over from Family Tree Maker 2005 because IT wasn't compatible with Vista but they released a patch and now it works flawlessly again. Only problem is, I can't stand to use FTM 2005 after having used RootsMagic; it looks so...primitive. PLEASE, RootsMagic....come out with a patch!!!

Deleting or modifying newly created Fact Types

04 May 2007 - 05:17 PM

I created a new fact type, but when I went to enter information, it didn't look quite right, so I tried to find a way to modify it but couldn't. So I created a new fact type with the same name and tried to delete the first one but couldn't find a way to do that either. Does anyone know if it's possible and if so, how to do it?

Vista compatibility issues

02 May 2007 - 08:57 PM

I am running RootMagic version 3.2.4 on a Gateway laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium. Every now and then, all of my data disappears. The 'Family' screen will be there, but all the names, dates, etc. are gone except for a single '?' under the 'Sex' column where the children should be. If I click on 'Search' or anything else, a window pops up telling me that "RootsMagic Genealogy Software has stopped working" and that "Windows is looking for a solution to the problem". Then another window pops up telling me the program needs to close. This happened to me about 6 or 7 times in a 3 hour period.

On the advice of RootsMagic customer support, I removed my database files out from under "Program Files" and moved them to 'My Documents' but I still get the message "RootsMagic Genealogy Software has stopped working". Then another window pops up that says "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" with a 'Close Program' button in the lower right hand corner. For the record, I bought RootsMagic as a download.

So I backed up my .rmg file, uninstalled RootsMagic and reinstalled it under C:\RootsMagic, leaving my .rmg file under C:\Users\(name)\Documents\Genealogy\RootsMagic; that didn't help either. I even tried running RootsMagic under administrator mode and all that did was make the problem worse.

This is starting to get really, REALLY annoying having to restart the program every 30 minutes or so. The customer support guys are scratching their heads on this one. Is anyone else having similar problems? This is driving me crazy!!!

Multiple marriages and step-children

01 May 2007 - 10:32 PM

I would like to see it possible to select a child and have the option to designate which is the birth parent and which is the step parent. I switched over from Family Tree Maker 2005 because it's not yet compatible with Windows Vista and frankly, I'm disappointed with RootsMagic. With FTM2005, it was easy to configure the relationships between parents/step-parents and children/step-children. But with RootsMagic, there isn't even an option for that. You can choose the "Edit Family" option but other than arranging the order of the children, there's not much else you can do - it's a joke. Try out FTM 2005 for a little while and learn a thing or two.
Another thing I'm having to deal with is that RootsMagic has IT'S own compatibility issues with Vista Premium. It keeps freezing, then shutting down on me.
