heh heh... yes you can quit thinking about it.. heh heh... :D

Yes it was "a space". Sometines it is difficult to write down what we are trying to say..so i hope it makes sense.

But it is all fixed now..

Yes the first list was the "list" that should have merged down with the other names.

As I deleted each space, (I had to go into each name, a bit time consuming) I noticed that the names of people would just go down into the proper index list.

I just worked my way down, it was maybe about 20 names, and now I have the one idex list in alphabetical order as I should have.

Crikey there is always something to learn with computers!

Have a great day Alfred! :)

A SPACE?

OH, it wasn't the names after Z that were wrong, it was the first set, those with the leading space.

You mentioned something about those with a question mark, I tried adding one of them, but they showed up before the others that way.

Then I just couldn't think of anything that could be doing it.

Happy to hear you got it solved. (And, glad you told me what it was, I can quit thinking about it now.)

ok i have corrected the problem. I sent a print screen copy of my index to rootsmagic support they could see the problem.

I had copied & pasted some names into my database and I must have copied the space infront of the surname also.

I just took out the space before each surname and it put all those names back into my index alphabetically with no problems.

Thanks again for your replies & help Alfred.

Hi Alfred

ok i have changed all the names with question marks, to "unknown" first name or surname.

I still have two indexes....

"Are they sorted that way in the RootsMagic Explorer too? How about in the People view?" - yes they are sorted that way in those lists also.

it is very strange.. i can't even highlight the names and drag them down... well i don't seem to be able to do that.. there must be a way to resort the index into alphabetical with out having "two indexes".
