In Topic: Adoption by step parent

For over fifty years I have used the name "Walter Jones - Smith" for an adoptive name change. It looks better on family group sheets and pedigrees if you use a space on either side of the hypen. As long as your place a note in the adoption fact, readers will have no misunderstanding. We have not had a single letter or phone call from those not familar with genealogy after several book publications even before computers became available.

You must remember however that Walter Jones- Smith will be found AFTER all the other member of the Jones Family in the RootsMagic Explorer. Bruce has done us all a favor with the "namefind" at the lower part of Explorer. You can use the given name of "Walter" and the surname of "Smith" and he will be located.

It was not rare in the 18th and 19th centuries for persons to change their surnames without going to court to do so. You may wish to add this also to your note to aid those that are researching the same family. This will save them tons of work !
