Thanks to all for all your help.
I'm going to print out your new information and ideas and start fresh after I take a few deep breaths.

I'm getting ready to give up.
I checked the original GEDCOM and the original Data Base for any duplicates and there are none there. I even reimported it to a new data base and made a new GEDCOM from the data base.
But, when I import it everyone in the import is duplicated. I merged them and after the merge not only are the names duplicated but all the information on it is duplicated. For example all the birth dates, marriages etc.
Another thing I noticed is that under sources there is a source noted for one of the first times I tried to import it. Even though I have never saved the information and I have restored it every time.
I'm sure by this time your sick of me and I'll understand if you don't want to continue to help explain this. I've reread the book I don't know how many times and printed out all your directions.I'm really not as big a ditz as I may seem to be here. I GOTTA be missing something.

Also, for some reason when I go to open up the help file it says there is an error and then the search part won't work. Could the program be corrupted? Do you think maybe I should redown load it?

It's me again :-(
I did everything you suggested.
I went in and merged all those that were duplicates thinking O BOY I did it.
Well, when I went to the names list there were duplicates all over the place. :-(
I tried deleting like you told me too thinking "some parents may have two sets of parents listed" but all that did was leave an unknown spouse.
Soooooo I'm back to square one again.
I DID manage to merge another GEDCOM I had that didn't have many of the same people. That one went fine when I merged the one or two people. So THAT did work.
The second GEDCOM that has soooooo many of the same people just isn't working. There are duplicates everywhere :-(
Suggestions?

Deb,

I wasn't suggesting that any falsehoods be used to make something look good in a data base. I'm sorry if my post came off that way.

I to am the product of two unmarried parents and a one night stand. And although I was adopted I still use the terms Birth Mother or Birth Father or Birth Parents as well as Adoptive in the same context.

My thought was that if your mother raised you then Birth Father or Birth Parent could be a term used for your Father instead of a Spouse to your mother.

I didn't mean to step on any toes.

Hi Again,

"Now you are trying to get some of the people from the new temporary database into your main database.
And dragging and dropping does not get enough of them.
When you drag and drop two or three selections, you end up with two or three copies of some of the people.
Then you restore your main database backup and start all over."

EXACTLY this is what keeps happening. Believe me your not insulting me and oversimplification works best, I think, with newbies like me :-)

Are you suggesting that I make another temp data base using the GEDCOM I was sent and delete the people in it that I don't want to include and then try and export it from there and import it into my main data base?

I still have to learn how to link and merge. :-(

I appreciate everyones patience. I feel bad asking all these questions but I guess thats how we learn.
