In Topic: Version 4 - should I ?

23 September 2009 - 10:33 PM

I will stay with RM3, 89,000 people, 34,000 families, 2,600 pictures, RM4 was always building indexes, thumbnails or something, if I add a picture it creates thumbnails allover again, If I try to just browse the picture you guessed it more time waiting for thumbnails, 4,700 pictures on computer. Stay with RM3.

In Topic: RM4 seems to take quite a long time to open

I also have the same problem that Brenda Hare has. Which is why I am not going to upgrade till that is solved. I'll stay with RM3. 89,000 people take too long to index with 2,500 pictures all I do is wait.

In Topic: Transfering Alt Names

14 June 2009 - 10:40 PM

the gedcom will not work either has the alt name doesn't stand out.

1 NAME Merlin Magalvist /BRYANT/
2 GIVN Merlin Magalvist
1 NAME Friday //
2 GIVN Friday

Friday is my grandfather's nick name it imported as an alt name.
with over 960 alt names it would take forever.

I suppose you could make the changes in a gedcom, but for this, I think that would be way more complicated and error prone than just making the change one by one in RM3.

If you do it all from RM3 Explorer, it will go faster.

Click on Find and search for Alternate name is not blank.

Double click on the person's name in the upper right pane to open the Edit person screen.

Click on the Alternate name fact and copy the part of the name you want for the nickname.

Close that fact and paste the nickname in the nickname part of the person's name.

Delete the Alternate name, if desired.

Close the Edit person screen.

Go to the Next person with an Alternate name using the Next button.

When you are ready to stop for awhile, select the next person to be changed on the RM Explorer screen to go to a main screen. Bookmark that person.

When you come back, reenter your search in Find. Cancel the Explorer screen. Go to your Bookmarked person and reopen Explorer. This person will be your starting point.

In Topic: Multiple Parents report

The report that lists individuals with multiple parents should have an option to restrict the report to only persons with no Adoption fact. Fortunately I have only about 15 cases of multiple parents in my 14,000+ database: 12 adoptions and 3 with two possible ancestries. I can see the case where someone might have many more adotptions, where multiple parents are legit, and have them clutter the report making it hard to locate the real problems.

I too would like to see this report as I have noway of knowing almost 88,000 people in my database
