Hi there -

I think (changed my mind a couple of times!) that i'm ready to migrate from The Master Genealogist to RM. I have had RM for about 6 months and have been swinging back and forth between migrating or staying with TMG...Some background - I have been using TMG for years (from v4), my dataset contains approx 4300 people, associated events & sources (not insignificant).

If anyone has done the same, can you pass on tips/tricks, as i'm keen not to start from scratch! While testing the importing of a GEDCOM generated from TMG, it appears that there are things that i need to clean up - namely:
  • Places/Addresses
  • Witnessed events
  • Custom sentence structures and the like
  • Consolidate sources/citations

Thanks for your help and i look forward to a new experience!

Sean

Sean, to get you started, you might check out this Knowledge Base entry:

http://support.roots...g-to-rootsmagic

While you're waiting for comments from those who've used TMG in the past, you might want to check out some of these links that I discovered via a search of the boards:

http://forums.rootsm...-to-roots-magic
http://forums.rootsm...n-from-tmg-7-04
http://forums.rootsm...erting-from-tmg

The dates look to be a little older, so it's possible that they could be a bit out-of-date in light of updates to RM4 since those times.

Well that was a nightmare...the addresses almost had me turning back to TMG.

For those of you who aren't aware, when you export a gedcom from TMG, it merges the detail field into the PLACE field in the GEDCOM file. I worked out a way to automate the seperation of the detail field into a RM supported ADDR field.

Back on track :D

I noted your observations with a TMG gedcom import into RM in our tracking system so it can get looked at.

Hello Sean and other former TMG users,
I'm thinking of making the switch from The Master Genealogist to Roots Magic as you did a year ago. Any particular advice on attempting the gedcom?
TIA,
Michelle

Michelle, you might want to do a search in the RM5 section. It's very possible that someone has addressed this subject since the time RM5 was released several months ago. I also seem to remember that RM is working on a direct import (vs. GEDCOM import) for TMG files.

Thanks! I didn't realize I was under RM4.

Can you provide some detail as to how you did this? It would be of help to other prospective TMG emigres. And I might see if it can be incorporated in my RMpi utility.

It was that long ago Tom, I'll need to look and search hard drives. Give me some time.

Cheers,
