Genealogy programs are set up for tracing lineage and not general research and trying to mix the two in one database is difficult at best.

A General research database can be setup to the way the user does research and how the information is extracted. There are all sorts of possibilities when the database is not tied to a lineage based database.

This is one possibility for set up, but there are many others.:

Surname, Places
Child: Surname, Arkansas
Child: Given name: Sharp County Surname: Arkansas [link all sources that pertain to that place] [parent to persons with source names, Surnames, and individual persons and child to Surname and Individual persons]
Child: Given name:1880 Census, AR, Sharp [source name] Surname: Arkansas, Sharp County [in name suffix enter no data found or data found as a search criteria] [link that source] [parent to persons with source names, Surnames, and individual persons and child to Surname and Individual persons]
Child: Given name: Smith Surname: Surname [link all individual persons, place persons, and source persons that pertain to that surname]
Child: Given name: James Surname: Smith [link all events & sources that pertain to that person]

Since children can have more than one set of parents, you could have James Smith both as a child and a parent of, say, AR, Sharp, 1290005, Marriage, 1893-1908 [source person name] and .Sharp County Arkansas [place person name]

If you print a report, narrative, individual summary, family group sheet for AR, Sharp, 1290005, Marriage, 1893-1908, James Smith would be on it as a child.

If you print that report for James Smith, AR, Sharp, 1290005, Marriage, 1893-1908 [source person] and Sharp County Arkansas [Places] are shown as children.

Families can also be linked to Individual persons, if wanted.

You can use any other feature of RM, Groups, Custom reports, ToDos, Repositories, notes for person or event, etc.

You could have a Group with all sources {persons] marked for those sources that were checked and no information found. Or you could make a Group for sharing with someone else.

Note: all Places and Sources should be linked to a person or event in the database.

As usual, trying to explain how do something is a lot more confusing than actually doing it. :)
