when trying to update within rm4, i just get "request timeout" messages. this happens when using the intro screen or selecting update from the menu bar.
the only way i am able to update is by going onto the rm website and manually downloading the update.
does anyone know of this issue and hopfully a solution?
i'm running win7/64bit
thanks

rm is listed in my firewall's whitelist. the problem isn't in the actual connection. i think rm connects to it's server fine. when there are no updates, i quickly get a message saying i have the most recent version. but, if i don't have the latest version, it seems that the rm server hangs up and does not release the file to download. after waiting 3-4 minutes, i get the "timeout" message.

Go to http://www.rootsmagic.com
then click updates/rootsmagic
This will allow you to download the latest version.
It sounds like your antivirus is blocking you or you installed directly into the program
folder in your C drive.

I feel that downloading the update installer, saving it then running it is the better option anyway.

If the latest build is flawed in any way, you can go back to one of the previous builds.
I have to either rename the installer to indicate it's version or store them each in an identifiable folder. Fifteen to twenty MB is a small portion of the room on current hard drives.

To reinstall an earlier version, I only have to delete the RootsMagic.exe file then run the desired installer.

==== P.S. ====
You had better have a backup from that earlier version because sometimes they won't work with a file from a newer version.

perhaps you are right alfred. seems like a more flexible way to go, and the storage space really is a non issue.

thanks.
when i initially installed rm4 (upgrading from 3), i believe i downloaded the installer and installed in its default directory. i'm running win7/64bit, so it installed in c:\program files(x86).
however, all data folders are stored on a separate, dedicated drive.
