On Win 98SE, I found the files RM created to burn a Shareable CD at C;\Windows\Application Data\RootsMagic\CD Program.

Yep, that's where they were, and I was able to burn them using 3d party software.  And, the new CD works as it's supposed to.

What's troubling however, is the fact that the RM3 burn feature never gives me the opportunity to "burn cd" after the files are created.

I need someone with intimate knowledge of the software to tell me if this is a problem affecting only some users with certain computers, or if it is a bug that can be patched.  From what I read here it seems to be affecting only some users.

If the CD files are being created but the CD is not being burned, this will work.

1. Open Rootsmagic.  Go to Tools/Create a Shareable CD and, after the files are created, close the Burn CD screen instead of burning the CD.  Close RootsMagic.

2. Open 3rd party CD burning software.  Go to C;\Windows\Application Data\RootsMagic\CD Program.  Choose the files and Picture folder in the CD Program folder.  Do not include the CD Program folder itself or the autorun won't work.

Thanks Laura.  I took your advice.

Burned a CD using RM . . .  but the read-only software on the disk would crater.  I did a visual check of the contents of the CD - it looked like all the files were there.  I burned another CD using the files in C:\Windows\Application Data\RootsMagic\CDProg using Nero which was bundled with my CD burner and all went well.

We seem to be running across a remarkable number of variations on this theme. My experience last night:

Process of creating the CD went without a hitch. I'm on a laptop with 2000 Pro and 512 of memory. Pulled it from there and moved it to another computer identically configured. Autorun worked perfectly, front page came up, and everything was accessible and ran fine. Moved it to a system with XP and 512 of memory. Autorun ran, but instead of bringing up the front page it simply opened a window showing the contents of the CD. From there I could double-click the Exe which then brought up the front page. Why the two systems handled it differently I don't know, but at least for me it worked reasonably well - I had something useable at the end.

Alfred,

I cannot find where the files to be burned are created/stored.  Otherwise I could burn them with 3d party software.

smile.gif  OK using my machine running XPSP2 with 1.5GB memory I was able to create a complete CD that self starts and ejected when the preparation was complete. (Note slightly over 3000 records in the database and lots and lots of photos and about 1500 references.)
I am using a Memorex CD/DVD-RW drive. I noted the following during the preparation.

1. The photo to be put on the front page does not show up in the preview, but did show up on the opening page of the CD.
2. After you click to burn, waiting until the green bars are complete and then wait some more.  The tracks and indexes are being finalized and I found it took another minute to complete the CD at that time it ejected as I had requestion.

So, other than the small error of no picture on the preview, all went as it was published. Creation was smooth and easy. Hats off Bruce!

Alfred, am also having problems with the burning.  On my main machine, running XP home it will burn the disk and I can run it in the read only drive.  But when I go to run the progrm on my laptop, a tosiba with dla writeabl drive, it won't run.  I get a message that a folder is corrupt and can't be read.  Using widows explorer, it tells me the disk is full, but does not show files.

Maybe we can get a option to write the file to the hard disk so we can copy them with a third party software.  Maybe an option to delete the files after we are sure everything burned?

HMMM, I did get my Win 98 machine to burn a sharable CD when I tried it.  but I only tried it once I think.

I never had any problems burning the sharable CDs on my XP Home machine, except for once when I was using an OLD 8X disk on a new burner, I forgot to tell it to slow down and it burned too fast to get some of the pictures copied properly.

-- Trying to run that on my old Win 95 computer crashed it several times, I still don't know why.

I NEVER did get to see a preview of my cover page though, on any machine.

=======
But, as I just wrote on the GenSmarts thread, I hate to say it, but I am afraid that we are all going to have to upgrade to Win XP home or better soon.

I couldn't find the files that were created as suggested, mainly because I don't have a Windows. file as such. I have WINNT, but no application files.

Success at last!  Using Roxio I finally was able to create a shareable CD. Thanks for all the help.
