first time posting so hope I am following rules of posting:

I have RM7 on my MacBook and use it a lot, especially recently when I found another line to work on.

I have several lines on the many branches of my family tree.

is there a way to select descendants and ancestors of my mother not only direct line ancestors but extended ones.. like her aunts, cousins etc, second marriages etc?   I tried but could not find how to do that.  either its descendants or direct ancestors.

I would want to create a separate Ged Com file which I could share with other family of same lineage.

When you create the GEDCOM under "People to export" use "Select from a list". Highlight your mother and then click on Mark Group.  Select "Ancestors of highlighted person" and on the screen that comes up select "Ancestors and descendants of ancestors". Set the number of generations for both Descendants and Ancestors. What this will do is climb up the tree that many generations of ancestors, then it climbs down the tree of each ancestor that many generations. It will get the full tree for the person. The only people it won't include is anything that goes up the descendants spouse's line. It will stop at them.

thanks for your help. and sorry for my delay in replying.

this is what I did:

  • opened my RM file
  • selected my mom
  • selected export, not everyone but selected from list highlighted person
  • unmarked group... only ancestors or descendants show
  • 10 gen... then option ancestors & descendants of ancestor... 10 gen

marking indicator popped up but nothing after that.

so I created a new file in RM

and tried to import the ged... nothing!

what am I doing wrong? this should be so easy!!

Slightly different method, that might (or might not) get you where you want

after choosing [Select From List]

then [Mark Group]

then [Everyone in the highlighted person's tree]
