Especially in the sidebar on the left, allow the use of sorting substitutes. Let the user flag all the ARCIERO and ARCIERE as ARCIERI even if they have the documented orthography displayed. Don't require that the user flag them one at a time, either. Also allow the same feature for given names. When a birth record says the father is Francesco Antonio Arciero, he might very well be in the database as Francescantonio Arcieri. In English, consider all the different variations of Catherine.

I handle this by entering an Alternate Name fact for every variation of a person's name that I find. Whether by name change, spelling error, or any other reason.


I group all of the Alternate Names after all of the other indivdual and family facts, and add Sort Dates to put them into my preferred order.
