Is there a setting that allows you to reverse the order of the places?

Yes and no.
Yes. Lists>Place List>Print. There is a button for reverse order.
No. In just displaying the place list, scrolling through through it, "searching" it by typing in a place name, there is no reverse ordering capability. This is a needed feature that doesn't presently exist.

This is related to Jerry's comment.
Lists>Place List>Print>Print All Places then [x] reverse place names and create the report
This will make an alphabetic list of place names. By scrolling through the list, it is relatively easy to spot duplicates with small variations in spelling. Make note of them for correction or merging.

As Jerry said, this additional and simple tool is a very much needed on screen interactive feature, printing a list to a flat inactive report is archaic to say the least.
Customers should never be frustrated by things they cannot do.
