Perhaps to cut down on the 'waiting time' were going to skip RM8 and go straight to RM9 :D

Joking aside sure it will be good news!

So anything in the wind about a release date this year? Anyone else hoping the user interface will be updated/modernized?

There is no new news about an RM8 release date other than "this year". The brief RM8 demos that people have seen at genealogy conferences suggest a much flatter, much more modern user interface. There are very few details from the demos.

It was nice to read the blog entry but people do need to be aware that the RM4 teasing of features lasted 8 months, I would still not be expecting a release until late 2019.

The company has faced sereral challenges I was not fully aware of, I do hope Bruce gets a chance to go back to those roots and engage more fully with the customer base, if thats even possible in todays online world.

What would really be useful in RootsMagic 8 is a marked upgrade to the Relationship Calculator and Reports functions.

What do you see as the most needed improvements in Reports?  Just curious.

I have posted some of my most needed improvements many times. Most of them involve better control of output from Descendant Narrative reports. For example, I need all aspects of reports to be under control of Sentence Templates. This includes the spouse sentence and the children's sentences in lists of children. It includes better control of vertical white space. It includes the ability to force children with no spouses or children themselves nonetheless to be forwarded into the next generation for the Register and Modified Register formats. This includes the ability to produce lists of children that are next to the parents in all the different outline formats. I don't need it myself, but it includes the need for multiple language support. Multiple language support needs much more than just Sentence Templates. It also needs controls for things like the names of months and names of places, etc. And you need to be able to support multiple languages out of the same database at the same time, essentially having multiple Sentence Templates for each Fact Type with the ability to pick the English templates or the French templates at report time.

I need the ability to include information about spouses of spouses and half siblings. I need to include more photos inline with the narrative, not just in separate chapters in RM's Publisher facility.

Those are all Good Points, Jerry.

I would like to see RM8 allow me to see ALL the different ways two individuals are related when I use the Relationship Charting Function.

Currently, in RM7, only a single relationship will Chart and Print.

I'd also prefer to see all the relationships listed so I can view each one interactively and see the individual permutations.  Then I'd want to Chart and Print the ones I want on a particular day.

This can prove to be fascinating if you want to know how many different ways A is related to B --- Henry VIII to Queen Elizabeth -- or moi to Jennifer Lawrence.

If you read the e mail received today RM8 will be a 2020 model. Blog said look at the 30 min video about RM8 but video was not attached.

However I edit this post and I advise that I have looked around the internet and found a RM blog site that has the video.Go have a look

I have watched it earlier today and I am probably pleased that Rootsmagic have decided to put quality before release targets, I need to decide on my way forward and am happy to wait.

There are several quality products out there, it could be argued some might also be due an upgrade. In my opinion Rootsmagic needs to place itself ahead of these offerings to be in a good position over the next several years. I am well used to RM7 and it's UI deficiencies so I am happy to continue to work between RM7 and the other software I am also using at present so I can make the best decision to suit my needs.

I remember the RM4 blog tease very well but when that version came to market there were more issues than one might expect, I don't expect Rootsmagic want to repeat that experience.

So, in short, RM doesn't want Mac users.

Well, RM8 will have a native Mac version without the Crossover wrapper.  I've used both OS versions, and I'll be glad when the wrapper is no longer needed!  I assist new genealogy researchers, who are split about 50:50 between Mac and PC OS, so I'll be glad to wholeheartedly recommend RM8 to both.

Best regards, Jim

Curious thing about Bruce's video - when I try to watch it keeps hanging at about the 22 minute mark. Has this happened to anyone else?

I feel like someone reading a whodunnit and finding that the last chapter is missing!

It worked fine for me. Well, it wouldn't play on my iPad so I had to watch it on my Windows PC. But having done so, it worked fine. I use Chrome as my primary browser.

I wonder if there is another reason for the recently declared delay to RM8 release.

We know FTM2019 has been released and we know the feature list but I have just read of another software package which I guessed was due an upgrade soon as the current version is the same age as RM7. Personally I find this package far superior to RM in many areas and I am using it on the side at present but I only want one package and not several. My sacrifice, if RM8 falls short of my personal needs, is that based on the current version specs I would be forced to drop unique Place Details which could have Media and Notes attached and either record them as address without these details or combine them with the Place inself. However the gains in other areas are very attractive and productive so therefore I will continue to wait so I can make the best informed decision for the future of my research, it's not a decision I take lightly.

So I have just read the below with the offer of "buy the current version now and get the upgrade free" I wonder where I have read that before. I did not take the Rootsmagic offer when it was first posted, the money aspect is not imprtants to me and I really need to see what I am buying or investing my work in. However I did buy the competitor software almost a year ago and if RM8 even measured up to the features in that current version then it would have been enough for my loyality and familiarity with RM to keep me as a user, now everything for me is up for grabs again.

I haven't searched out any rumours of features and I have no idea of the companys interest or user demand for cross platform compatibility, however the genealogy software race continues and to the winner the spoils.

"Includes a FREE upgrade to version 7 - due for release in early 2020!"

Dear Colleges,

I currently own RootsMagic 7 and I am willing to upgrade to version 8 as soon as it arrives...

I saw this offer for Holidays season from RootsMagic. :D

https://www.rootsmag...m/holidayoffer/

Based on previous offers, is this a good way to ensure an upgrade to version 8?

I am not familiar with previous company upgrade offers for new software version after new releases.

I am a former user of Family Historian (I am still somehow, I keep switching among them) and this will be my first upgrade regarding RootsMagic.

Any insights are welcome!  ;)

Thanks, Pedro

The current list price to upgrade to RM7 from a previous version or from a competing product is $19.95. The fee to upgrade to RM8 has not been published but RM has said it will increase so let's assume it will be $29.95.

So the question for you is whether $30 is trivial or not. There's a risk that RM8 may not be what you want or may never come out. If that's what happens, is an extra licence for RM7, one for Personal Historian and the associated books of value to you?

You could wait for RM8 release, see what the user reviews say, try out the free Essentials version before purchasing the upgrade.

Tom,

I think I will fall into the "wait and see" camp.  It's not the $30 so much as it is my time. I'd rather spend it on my research instead of working through a learning curve, and possible bug fixes, with RM8. Hoping for the best.
