on a few records I get duplicate spouses and parents

i.e.  2 spouses with same name or 4 parents with same names

I have looked for duplicate records and merged those records and that sometimes work

but most of the time it does not.

I have gone to the database tools and

1. Cleaned Phantom records

2. Compact Database

3. Rebuild Indexes

4. tests for Integrity

I do it in that order.

But does not resolve anything

Any help, I can send an image of what it looks like but can not find how to add it to this message

Thanks

Advise from RM (Renee and others) always says to run the Database Tools in order (Test integrity, Rebuild indexes, Clean phantoms) and to run Compact database immediately after opening the database.

In practice, that means:

a -- open your database

b -- run the first three tools

c -- close and re-open your databse

d -- run Compact database

like I said earlier I did all those, not in the same order so I did as you said and

it made no differences.

Thanks for the info

Do you have RIN displayed? Tools > File Options > Number to display after name

Look carefully at the couples with multiple spouses of the same name. Do the duplicates have the same or different RIN?

If RINs are not the same, then you probably need to do a manual merge.

If RINs are the same, do you have duplicate marriage facts for the couple?

If you have duplicate marriage facts with the same date and place, then delete one (or more) duplicates. Make sure to copy non-duplicated sources to the marriage record you are keeping.

If you have duplicate marriages with different dates, is one an error, or did the couple actually marry twice (maybe with intervening divorce, or maybe as a re-commitment on an important anniversary) ? Are there two marriage facts with same date but different place?

I have a custom fact that I use to preserve documentation, while eliminating confusion about which marriage is the primary (most likely to be correct) fact:

Name: Marriage (Alternate)
Abbrev: Marriage (Alt)
Fact type: Family

Use
  Date: Yes
  Place: Yes
  Description: Yes

Include
  GEDCOM: Yes
Publish online / Create HTML: Yes
  Group sheets: Yes
  Narrative reports: Yes
  Individual summary: Yes
  Lists: Yes

Sentence template:
[Couple] <#Couple#was|were> married (alternate fact info)< [Date]>< [PlaceDetails]>< [Place]>, [Person:given] was <[Person:Age:plain]> years old and [Spouse:given]< was [Spouse:Age:plain]>. <?[Desc]|[Couple:Caps:NoCycle] were [Desc].|>.

It is also possible to have two marriage links, without marriage facts. If you go to Family View, look for the [ 2 ] button at the top-right of the person with duplicated spouse. Right-click once, and look at the popup.

Are both names and RINs the same?

You may have a weird database corruption. I'd suggest going to  https://support.root...ic.com/hc/en-us

Does one of the 2 positions indicate "unknown spouse' ?

There are a couple different approaches to clearing out an unknown spouse.

1 -- Run the Database Tools, which usually works (unless the unknown spouse has a child, then it won't).

2 -- Assign a dummy name (i.e. "Aa Bb") to the unknown spouse. Then merge those two individuals.

For some context and extent, try:
Reports->Lists->Individual List->People to print->Multiple parents->Information to include->(Parents,Spouses,Children)(of each person)
