Hello

I have often noticed when I am using RootsMagic and Family Search people having listed as an alternative name a name exactly the same as the name at the top of the screen in the name box.  Why?  Is this a misuse of the alternative names?

If the person is called by their middle name I keep it in the name part and put quotes around it.

In my database, if a person was known by their middle name, I put that name in the "Nickname" field - then it automatically get quotes around it.

FamilySearch does not like quotes around the names. It prevents some individuals from using all features of it. That is why you will see more alternate names.

But FS doesn't seem to like alternate names, either. Do I have that wrong?

No, you can add alternative names on FamilySearch.

I finally found it in the Family Search user interface. It's under Other. Which is to say it's not under Name at all, but rather it's under the general category of Other. Hence, it's almost invisible in the user interface. It also appears that alternative names are not searchable.

Do RM's alternate names go over to Family Search via the API and vice versa?

Thanks,

Jerry

Yes, you can add alternative names using the FamilySearch Person Tools.

I figured out how to do that. But do alternative names work from RM through the API?

Yes, they can go either direction. From FamilySearch into RM or RM into FamilySearch. That is using the FT API.
