The RootsMagic Relationship Calculator...

One of my Favorite Features in RootsMagic.

It calculates VERY FAST, indeed almost instantaneously, on a Robust Computer.  Beautiful, Elegant, Utilitarian, Genealogical Software.

...And it calculates MULTIPLE RELATIONSHIPS...

...Then allows for a PRINTING of a LIST of all those relationships, with the COMMON ANCESTORS clearly delineated.

So, let's say one is working with a relatively small database, say 50,000 people, and one wants to know the relationships between A and William The Conqueror.

One finds there are 31 such relationships in the database.

Now, one can print out a list of the 31 connections with common ancestors.

BUT, and here's the catch...

When one then goes to Reports > Charts > Relationship Chart...

...One can only generate, print and save ONE of those 31 relationships, the one that is deemed the "Closest".

How Useful to be able to View, Print and Save ALL 31 of the said relationships.

Then Ponder Same -- With Skill & Daring.

...Delighted to hear this is on the coveted "enhancement request list" and heartily hopeful it will be implemented in RootsMagic 8.

However, it's vitally important the baby not be thrown out with the bathwater in any "upgrade".

One of the finest features of the current RootsMagic Relationship Calculator in RM is its SPEED.

Yes, it provides fewer data for the reader to crunch but it is BLINDINGLY FAST and still provides much useful data on the relationships -- and will generate a chart of ONE such relationship -- the allegedly "closest" one -- faster than you can say "Seize Quartiers" three times, with a good French accent.

Legacy Family Tree Maker, on the other hand, will calculate and print out charts of ALL the relationships -- but is PAINFULLY SLOW.

With more data produced one must wait longer.  Yes, and with six you get egg roll.  All quite logical.

But surely the programmers can do better and give MORE DATA but MAINTAIN A RESPECT FOR SPEED.

...And our hardware needs to make a mighty contribution too, of course -- as power increases.
