Wondering what is supposed to happen when I merge 2 places that each have additional place details.

If I have #1: Anytown, USA with a place detail of Protestant Church

And also #2: Anitoun, USA with a place detail of Fred's House

When I merge #2 into #1, I think I end up with Anytown, USA which has both of the 2 different place details in it.

That's OK, good even, but what about the events that had previously used those places and place details?

The event that previously happened at Anitoun, USA details Fred's House .... should it now be Anytown, USA details Fred's House?

I'm asking because I'm not sure it has done that correctly for me and I'm wondering if it is my testing or a bug or misunderstand functionality.

I haven't tested this in a long time, but to the best of my knowledge, the answer is yes. What are you getting instead?

Merging two places will combine all Place Details of both Places into merged Place which may result in duplicate Place Details requiring further merge.

I am not aware of real issues and I use this a lot, if both Places have Notes which are different they will be appended, if they are identical they will not.

OK, sounds like it works the way I hoped it would.

I just need to pay a little more attention to the cases I tried that seemed to not behave correctly.

No details to report of a problem, yet.

Let's close this issue here.

Thanks to both of you.

Based on the advise of the two fine gentlemen that commented earlier I have done extensive merging of places and place details. I've found that using DataClean, Places first tidies up the names in a more "bulk" fashion and makes the resultant merge easier. It's quicker to clean the places and place details using DataClean than to individually use the Split Place Details on the Place List. I admit I would have never figured out how to merge place details without their assistance.

Any idea where RM finds its logic to split pace details from the main places? I would like to see if there's a file I could edit to help RM find and parse these details.

I have thousands of places (55000), mostly because of European royalty lines. There are many<!> "Abbey of", "castle", "all saints" and many many others that appear to me to be obvious detail places.

When I run 'misplace place details' in the placeClean most of these details are not identified. On the other hand I do get some ridiculous suggestions for place details and I can't determine how the decisions are made. It's not the number of fields (commas)

I miss the way TMG used to let me move places into category columns - it was much more efficient than this! which is geared to smaller trees...

Appreciate any suggestions as I may lose my sanity while trying to clean up this stuff! :)

A suggestion is to operate on the database directly with a SQLite editor/manager. For background on the database structure and examples of queries and scripts that interrogate and modify places and place details, see this collection and more accessible through its sidebar menu.

I also spend quite some time splitting Place Details from Places and whilst the introduction of PlaceClean did offer some assistance the logic needs to be reviewed by development. By that I mean quite often it will catch and suggest spliting one Place with say the word Church in it but miss another almost identical example, same goes for other easy to spot exceptions needing cleaned. I did highlight NameClean exceptions and send an example gedcom to development, I can only hope it's being addressed.

One users example of a Place Detail and another can vary greatly so it's difficult for the suggestive highlighting in PlaceClean to be perfect. In light of that I suggested an enhancement to allow users to enter their own custom Place Detail identifiers which should cover different languages amd other variations, that was several years ago and sadly has not been implimented to date.

Confirming that is on the enhancement request list.
