Will RM blow a gasket if I use the place field for something like a URL, as opposed to a traditional place name?

I don't think so. RM doesn't seem to any real internal checking of what's been entered in the place name field. You can use the Place Finder or the Gazetteer to check for accuracy, but both of those are manual operations. You can ask for all Place Names to be geo-coded, in which case RM simply ignores entries that are not recognizable as a Place Name.

You don't say WHY you'd like to put a URL into the place field, and I'm curious to hear your explanation.

If you're happy with how they are brought out on-screen and in reports, why not?

I use the Place field for DNA testing services (Ancestry.com, 23andme.com, etc.) It works out well for me.
