I cannot figure out:

1. what media, if any, appears in narrative reports (other than the primary person pic).

2. what reports do other media show up in?

3. is scrapbook the only place you will see media attached to events, places, etc.?

2. how does Rootsmagic handle PDF files.

1. That's it.

2. Primary person pic in Indiv Summary and Family Group Sheet, Photo Tree, Wall Charts,...

3. Yup

4. It doesn't other than being able to link to it, tag it to the same things as image files, launch the OS default program to view/edit it, provided it was added as a "File" type.

Much room for improvement...

As Tom said, much room for improvement.

You can print a scrapbook. You can also include a scrapbook as a chapter under Publisher.

You can include a narrative report as a chapter under Publisher.

Therefore, the closest you can get to including a useful set of media associated with a narrative report is by using Publisher, but the media and the narrative report(s) will have to be in separate chapters.

My frustration with these limitations began a couple of decades ago with Family Origins, forerunner of RootsMagic. I attached a grave marker photo to a burial fact, fully expecting the photo to  print in a narrative report. It didn't. It still doesn't in the most current version of RootsMagic.

RM is presently being completely rewritten with the rewrite probably to be called RM8, although no one knows for sure about the name. It has been reported that the rewrite will include a new report engine. Nobody knows what will be in the new report engine, for example if it will deal with improvements in including media in narrative reports.

Thanks to Jerry and Tom for your responses. Hopefully we will see improvements in a newer version.
