As I recall, when adding a child, the program defaulted to the first occurrence of the surname in the index and highlighted that surname in the window. The same process now requires typing in of the surname. When adding many names, this can be tiresome. Am I wrong in thinking that this is a feature that was done away with?

I'm not at home where I can check my RootsMagic installation, but I don't believe the program has ever used "the index".
You have to type in the surname if no spouse(s) have ever been associated with the person you are adding a child to.
If spouse(s) exist and you select the individual and particular spouse to add to, then the male surname is defaulted to.
