My County Check Report does not appear to be working correctly:

When I add "Defynnog" as a place, the Geo Code standardises it as "Defynnog, Breconshire, Wales, United Kingdom"

However, the County Check states:

Defynnog, Breconshire, Wales, United Kingdom
Error: Breconshire never existed in Wales.

It is stating the same thing for other places including Brecon, Cray.

Also it appears to be confusing the United Kingdom with the United States:

When I add "Santon", the Geo Code standardises it as "Santon, Isle of Man, United Kingdom"

However, the County Check states:

30 Nov 1938 in Santon, Isle of Man, United Kingdom
Error: Isle of Man never existed in United States.

I would appreciate any advice

Oops. In both of your examples your "correct" and "incorrect" places read identically.

What's the problem?

BOTH
Santon, Isle of Man, United Kingdom
AND
Defynnog, Breconshire, Wales, United Kingdom
CAUSE
no problems in my database with County Check enabled (Ver 6.x)

The Gazetteer and CountyCheck databases are not the same database and the databases have different purposes.

I searched for Breconshire on Google.  The first link is titled Brecknockshire on Wikipedia.
The article begins "Brecknockshire (Welsh: Sir Frycheiniog), also known as the County of Brecknock, Breconshire, or the County of Brecon is one of thirteen historic counties of Wales, and a former administrative county."
I went to Tools, CountyCheck Explorer, and entered Wales and choose Contains.
It shows Brecknockshire, County,, from 1535 to 1 Apr 1974

Checking County Check Explorer for Isle of Man brings up a blank result.

My advice would be  to check the don't change box on the CountyCheck screen.
