CountyCheck does not handle the status of Newfoundland correctly.

The standardized form that CountyCheck uses is: "British North America" until 1 July 1867 and "Newfoundland and Labrador,Canada" on and after 1 July 1867.  This is far from correct.

The correct standardized form should be: "Newfoundland, British North America" until 15 May 1907. On and after 15 May 1907 and until 16 Feb 1934, it should be "Dominion of Newfoundland". On and after 16 Feb 1934 until 1 Apr 1949 is should be "Newfoundland, British North America".  On and after 1 Apr 1949 until 5 Dec 2001, it should be "Newfoundland, Canada". On and after 6 Dec 2001, it should be "Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada".

How can I get this reviewed and changed? Is this a RootsMagic issue or an issue that has to be addressed by a 3rd party that maintains the standardized address list?

Thanks, Mardon

Thanks for the link.  I should have found that thread myself.  Based upon what the link suggested, I have sent the following email.

To: standardfinder@ldschurch.org

Subject: Newfoundland and Labrador place name

The current Standard Finder database does not have any "Place time period" divisions for the place name Newfoundland and Labrador.  This is incorrect for all dates prior to 6 Dec 2001.  I believe that this problem should be corrected as follows.

For the island of Newfoundland:

"Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, World"

6 Dec 2001 -

"Newfoundland, Canada, World"

1 Apr 1949 - 5 Dec 2001

"Newfoundland, British North America, World"

- 14 May 1907

16 Feb 1934 - 31 May 1949

"Dominion of Newfoundland, World"

15 May 1907 - 15 Feb 1934

For Labrador:

"Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, World"

5 Dec 2001 -

"Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada, World"

1 Apr 1949 - 4 Dec 2001

"Labrador, Newfoundland, British North America, World"

23 Nov 1927 - 31 May 1949

"Labrador, British North America, World"

- 22 Nov 1927

The boundaries of Labrador in the 19th century were contested a lot so it is hard to set "Place time periods" for the 19th century.

Hope this will get reviewed and changes as required.  I have tried to be accurate but cannot guarantee all of the above information.

Regards, Mardon
