I am working through entries done before County Check was part of RM and am having problems with conflicting information. Not sure what source was used to create the County Check database.

If I use Family Search Location information, I find some errors.

Example:

Looking at Kittery, York, Maine I want to show the correct historical place location for various dates.

I know that Maine was founded 15 March 1820 from Massachusetts. USA

Obviously Massachusetts was properly identified as Massachusetts, British America prior to July 7, 1776

BUT the Family Search wiki on Maine history says

"1716-1760: The entire area was called York, a county of Massachusetts.
1760: Lincoln and Cumberland counties were formed. These counties and York were called the Province of Maine of the Massachusetts Bay Colony until 1779, when the area became known as the District of Maine.
1820: Maine became a state as part of the Missouri Comprimise.
1819-1820: Maine was officially separated from Massachusetts in 1819 and became a state in (March 15,)1820
."

Here th the site that starts the circular ref on the counties involved.

https://familysearch...e#Parent_County

I find that York Co was founded June 25 1789 from Lincoln Co.

But, looking at Lincoln Co I find that Lincoln was suposidly created June 19, 1760 from York Co

What would the proper identification for Kittery on 13 Nov 1690?

Kittery, Massachusetts Bay, British America

and on 13 Nov 1725?

Kittery,York, Massachusetts Bay, British America

What is the source for County Check and how do we submit corrections if found?

I ~believe~ it's based on this:

http://forums.rootsm...e-name/?p=65325

---
--- "GENEALOGY, n. An account of one's descent from an ancestor who did not particularly care to trace his own." - Ambrose Bierce
--- "The trouble ain't what people don't know, it's what they know that ain't so." - Josh Billings

I traced back to FamilySearch Standard Place finder

https://familysearch...ndardLookup.jsp

This helped a bit. At least there is now a "Feedback" link that i can use to identify conflicting information.
