The Gazetteer in Family Atlas is largely useless to me for a variety of reasons - its just not exact enough, and the place names can be confusing, for example.  Is there a way to import an excel or csv file into the Personal Places List?  Its my understanding that the only way for my genealogy upload to access added location data is when its added via the Personal Places List - a Places import does not appear to be added to the Gazetteer like the Personal Places List is (well, sorta, anyway).  If Family Atlas is to be useable to me, I need to add a large number of Personal Places, and its impractical to do so one at a time.

And, yet, if the Place List were to attempt to be "complete" it would include at least a couple million place names. And that's just for the USA and Canada. Toss in Europe and Asia and Mexico and South America and the United Kingdom and, and, and....

Have you considered such references as the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS)? Did you know that the GNIS states that there are 3,143 counties in the USA? Add townships, cities, villages, cemeteries, etc., etc., etc.....
I fear that what you wish for is not feasible....

Here's just three of the web references I periodically refer to:
GNIS http://geonames.usgs...mestic/faqs.htm

Canada place names http://www4.rncan.gc.../search?lang=en

Rootsweb Town Names search http://resources.roo...-bin/townco.cgi

And, just for good measure, I also keep copies on my desk of:

The International Geographic Encyclopedia and Atlas (Boston MA, Houghton Mifflin, 1979)

Webster's New Explorer Desk Encyclopedia (Springfield MA, Merriam-Webster, 2003)

I also have a bunch of old gazetteers (published between 1600 and 1900) on my Nook Color.

You're right, there's a huge variety of sources of info out there, and it's time consuming to collect and refer to them - but, seriously, do you REALLY want a Place List with every name in the world? Yikes !!! My hard drive is groaning....

There is an issue with direct import from RM6, so use a GEDCOM instead. It should then list all your personal places.
