What is the accepted manner for entering individuals when you do not know if they are still living? Is it better to leave the living check box checked, unchecked, or does it really not matter.

Default check is Living- what if I do not know if they are still alive?

It depends! Do you care about privatizing your data?
The purpose of the Living flag is to be able to privatize your data when producing GEDCOM, when uploading your data to the Internet, and that sort of thing. You can always choose not to privatize your data, irrespective of the Living flag. But if you do choose to privatize your data, the privatization process that is supported by RM depends on the Living flag.
But for example when I upload data to rootsweb.com, rootsweb.com pays no attention to RM's Living flag and instead has it's own method of privatizing my data.

If the birth date is over 105 years before the day you enter the person, or if there is a death or burial fact then the living flag is unchecked for you.
