After several years using Roots Magic, for the first time Roots Magic 6 is telling me it cannot open my file because it is read only. The file is not read only. I opened it just a couple of days ago. Has anyone had this problem?

Could it be in a read only folder or the Program Files folder, with the Windows update it could have made it more unusable.

Be sure to keep your data files in a data only folder, not with the programs.

In the Windows Explorer right click on your database file (RMGC) and select Properties and uncheck Read-Only.

Did you move your data from one computer to another with a CD-R or a DVD?  That would cause this problem.

I have the same problem.

Windows 7 64 bit

RM 6.3.1.4

I had a database open a few hours ago, then closed it.

I restarted my computer to update another program.

When I opened RM, the database did not automatically open as it usually does.

File > Open > Open a File > choose my database file (extension rmgc) > Open

I get the error message: "Error: attempt to write a readonly database (8)"

In Windows Explorer, I right clicked on the rmgc database file, selected Properties. In the General tab, the "Read-only" box is NOT filled in. Modified date is today, 4 hours ago.

I'm able to open other databases.

Is this an instance of "I hope you have a backup!"?  Well, I do have a backup. I attempted to RESTORE the backup (File > Restore). When I wanted to restore in the same folder as my database, a screen said, "Overwrite Existing Database? A database with this name already exists. Do you want to overwrite the existing database with this backup?" I clicked Overwrite database.

Another warning message popped up: "ZipForge: Cannot create file. [then the path to my file is listed] -Native error: 00019. File processing error, possibly disk is full." Options were to Abort, Retry, Ignore. Meanwhile the "Restoring backed up database" screen was spinning in a dialog box underneath the ZipForge error box. I aborted that.

I made a new folder in my databases folder. I was able to successfully restore a backup to that folder, since it was empty.

How scary is that to not be able to open my main database that I've been working on for years. Backups saved the day!

Still, why did my database fail to open!

What is the path to the database file that you could not open or restore over?

Were there other database files in this folder which you could open?

Is RootsMagic still unable to open this file without error?

If you move the file to a new folder, can RM open it there?

It is indeed a mystery that RM would see it as read-only yet Windows file properties does not...

No other databases were in the "myancestors_RM6" folder.

I hadn't tried moving it to another folder.

Well how about that, now the database will open!

An unsolved mystery, but now it works.

Thanks Tom

Is this folder subject to Dropbox or other synchronisation or automatic backup software?

It's not in a Dropbox folder or synced with anything. A Macrium Reflect backup was starting to run about the same time as when I tried to open the database. Thinking it was the backup causing the problem, I canceled the backup and waited a bit (about 5 minutes) before trying to open the RM database.
