If you add non-image files via the Image media type, these files won't open with their associated external software when double-clicked in the Media Gallery or an Album.
If you add image files via one of the other three Media types (File, Sound, Video) in the Add Media Item dialog, no thumbnail is generated and the image is unavailable to reports.
RootsMagic 6 has no tool to correct these mis-typed media items nor should it be necessary. Surely, the Media Type selection should simply set the browser filter for extensions of the corresponding file types but because the filters can be overridden, the stored file type should be based on the extension, not the Media Type drop-down list.
At the very least, a tool should be included to reset the Media type to match that of the file extension. In the interim, I have developed a SQLite script to do just that at Media Type Reset.
