Thought I recognized ed4becky as a RM user -- congratulations! Too bad that lack of functionality in the various genealogy programs forced spending what must've been a great deal of time and effort to create a third-party tool. Need to take a further look.

Not the one I was referring to . . . .

I like Evidentia, but I think something more comprehensive and flexible is on the way.

Paul, throw us a bone here! Yes, I realize you're probably unable, but couldn't resist asking . . .

Any idea yet of when the new research system will be available, Paul?

I think they are asking about the external program that Paul Harris mentioned he was beta testing.

Yes, Miranda, you are right. I was asking Paul about the release date of the beta he has been testing. I am under the impression from what he said that it is not connected to RootsMagic.

RootsMagic has a To Do List.

RootsMagic has a Correspondence List.

RootsMagic has a Research Log.

The problem, as I see it, is that the three are mutually exclusive of each other. If they were relational to each other, then RootsMagic could have the foundation of a true Research Management SYSTEM, which is sorely missing from the genealogy community, IMHO.

The subject has come up again and I believe is worthy of some further discussion on this important topic.

After watching Webinar #32 it is interesting that the questions posed towards the end are just as valid today as they were then. My thoughts now are that the To-Do List as a stand alone is superfluous and surely the Research Items should replace the To-Do List by giving them additional fields like status (Open/Closed) and a Priority field.

* Sources and Repository fields should facilitate linking to existing Sources and Repositories as the Rootsmagician eluded to.

* Copying within Research Manager should be better facilitated where a user might have a customized checklist of places to start research.

* The Correspondence List could remain separate but needs some way to be linked to the Research Manager.

* Correspondence often cites several Individuals, Families or Places so some form of multiple tagging to database entries needs to be introduced.

When Transfer to a Research Log is completed on a To-Do Item the original To-Do Item should be automatically deleted to save duplication IMO.

I disagree. RootsMagic should not automatically delete a ToDo after it is transfered to a Research log. That would mean, I could not transfer the ToDo to multiple Research logs.

Also, I may have a reason I want to retain the ToDo after I tranfer it to a Research log. I might even want to modify the ToDo and transfer the modified ToDo to different Research logs.

It seems logical (to me) that when performing Transfer to a Research Log the option to Create a New Research Log should exist, at present one needs to drop out, create the RL and return to this function.

Agreed, that is also in the tracking system as an enhancement request.

I was about to start naming my Research Logs in a format to help sort them in the future like prefixing them with [Individual], [Place], [Family] etc. But of course as the Research Log grows it will become harder to manage so categories would be a great help.

So from a drop down of ones own categories the user might select "Newspaper Library" as a filter to review what has been completed before.
