I have a secondary external hard drive that I keep my photos, including census records. I don't always have the external drive turned on - usually just when I am working with census records (ancestry), or with other photos.

I think that I can attach the photos (media) when I have the external drive turned on, but what would happen when I don't have the external drive on, and am working in RM? And then later I turn the external drive on will the link still be there?

I realize that I can experiment, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

It should cause no problem at all.

I think that you will have to have the external drive on the first time you open the database and do the "Lists->Media Gallery" so that all the thumbnails will be embedded into the file.
After that, you would only need the external drive when you wished to do something with a media item.
Of course, if you want to create a report with pictures, you would need the media folder on-line.
