There are two different FamilySearch websites. The WebSearch tab in RootsMagic accessed the www.familysearch.org website. The FamilySearch icons access the http://new.familysearch.org website. The NFS website will be moved over to the www.familysearch.org website near the end of the year and be called the FamilySearch Family Tree.
If you are looking for all the historical records you actually want the www.familysearch.org website. NFS is only compiled records of users research right now.

I think this would be good info to update the sticky at the top of this forum.
Thanks!

And L D S has given several time frames for release that have come and gone. So not even L D S can give you a date.
Even when L D S does release it, I'm doubtful how useful it will be for non L D S members. I certainly will not be taking any thing I find on there as correct until I do the research myself. I have seen too much wrong data which was submitted to L D S.
The following was overheard at a recent high society party...
"My ancestry goes all the way back to Alexander the Great," said one lady. She then turned to a second woman and asked, "How far does your family go back?"
"I don't know," was the reply. "All of our records were lost in the flood."

I tried to register to the newfamilysearch and it sent me to the "old" site where it told me I already had an account, which I do. Do I have to have a whole new user name too?

Guide is here:
https://help.familys...en/register.pdf
Don't know how you wound up on the "old" site. When you click the <Register for the new FamilySearch > link on this page (green arrow & text):
https://new.familyse...n/unsec/welcome
You should wind up at this link:
https://ident.family...lySearch&lng=en
I filled out the information and used my old username without any problem

During this time frame they are not taking new general public registrations on NFS. Yes, it is a mess, but FamilySearch is working on it. Family Tree should replace NFS by the end of this year.
You can register for Family Tree access at http://www.familysea.../familytree_tab . Just remember RootsMagic does not currently sync to it, but it will. This is the future direction of NFS.

Thanks so much for your response, Renee! This is very good news indeed. It's too bad there's so much conflicting info out there. But I'm glad I found this forum ... and got the skinny.
Best,
Margaret
