I'm fairly new to RootsMagic4 and I've been working on what I would call a descendants database (all the descendants emanating from one couple). I've been looking for a way to count the number of individuals in each generation (without doing it manually), but haven't been able to find anything in reports/lists/tools/etc. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to do this? Thanks.

Using Color Coding and Export GEDCOM to count generations:

Select the ancestor who's generations progeny you wish a count of.

I use six generations here but you could go farther.

Highlight the ancestor.
Go to the Tools and select Color Code People
Choose RED and color six generations of his descendants.
Do it again and choose Lime for five generations of descendants.
Do it again and choose Blue for four generations of descendants.
Do it again and choose Fuchsia for three generations of descendants.
Do it again and choose Yellow for two generations of descendants.
Now, remove the color from the original ancestor.
(I chose the colors as they go down the list)

Now, go to the File menu and choose Export - Select from list - Mark group - select people by data fields.
Color coding - is red -- OK = it will soon tell you how many people are Red, or in the sixth generation
You can cancel there and not export the GEDCOM file and check on the other colors/generations the same way.

Thank you! This worked great for counting all the descendants (ALL generations), but under Tools / Color Code People, I didn't see any option for selecting the number of generations of descendants. I selected "Descendants of current person", but there was no opportunity to define the number of generations I wanted. Am I missing something?

Use the "People selected from list" rather than the "descendants of selected person."

Then you get the "Select People window where you scroll to the ancestor of interest then click the "Mark People" button where you select "Descendants of highlighted person."
There you get the little number counter for Generations.

Sorry! I forgot about the direct choice for descendants or ancestors in the color coding tool.
