RootsMagic 7.1.0.1 is now able to directly import all versions of Family Tree Maker (FTM) files, previously owned by Ancestry.

If you have updated your database to the Software MacKiev (Windows or Mac) version of FTM 2014.1 the import will fail. MacKiev changed the encryption code and the file format so RootsMagic cannot recognize it as a Family Tree Maker file. It may have the same name, but its a different program now.

To work around this you will need to export the FTM 2014.1 file to the FTM 2012 format.

To export FTM 2014.1 (Windows or Mac)
Go to File>Export

Under Output format select "Family Tree Maker 2012" or "Family Tree Maker 2012 for Mac" from the drop down list

(Included other settings as desired)

Click OK, complete the export with selections are desired

This export will create an Ancestry version FTM 2012 backup of your database. RootsMagic will now be able to see and import these files.

The following Magic Guide demonstrates this process

RootsMagi 7.1.0.6. will now direct import the MacKiev FTM 2014.1 files. You no longer need to use the export method above.

Could you either update this post or delete it if it is no longer true?

The post I am replying to is dated March 2016  and it says:

RootsMagi 7.1.0.6. will now direct import the MacKiev FTM 2014.1 files. You no longer need to use the export method above."

And yet, another forum issue dated January 2017 says:

Here's a Knowledge Base article on this - http://support.roots...014-1-or-later- : and the article says you *DO* need to use the workaround export method.

So which is it?  Please clarify which versions of FTM can be imported by which versions of RM and how.

1) Can FTM 2014.1 build 1510 be imported by Roots Magic 7.2.3 and if so how?

2) Can FTM 2014.1 build 1474 be imported by Roots Magic and if so, which RM version(s) and how?

3) Can Ancestry FTM version 22.0.0.1410 be imported by Roots Magic, and if so, which RM version(s) and how?

Thanks in advance!

MacKiev did change the encryption password on 2014.1 between pre-release (which some users got to solve certain problems) and release. RootsMagic had been provided the earlier key but, presumably, not the later so it could no longer import directly. Hence the workaround requiring an export or save as to FTM 2012, which RM 7.2.3.0 can import. That's the latest version - best not use earlier.

Thanks Tom, so the answer to my questions are:

1) Can FTM 2014.1 build 1510 be imported by Roots Magic 7.2.3 and if so how? Yes, by exporting file in FTM 2012 format and then importing to RM 7.2.3.

2) Can FTM 2014.1 build 1474 be imported by Roots Magic and if so, which RM version(s) and how? Not sure still.  What version of FTM are you calling "pre-release"?  If it FTM 2014.1 build 1474 then I think the answer is YES, files in that format can be imported to RM 7.2.3.0 without going thru the export workaround.

3) Can Ancestry FTM version 22.0.0.1410 be imported by Roots Magic, and if so, which RM version(s) and how?  Not answered.

I have all the software versions and I have 10 databases I'm juggling across different PCs so I need to pin down the available options.

Could you add clarification to #2 and #3?

The very early FTM 2014.1 released (not sure the version number) would still import. But, there are so many updates if someone has 2014.1 more than likely it's the latest one. Simply export as 2012 if you have FTM 2014.1 any version.  If you have FTM 2014 or earlier then use the direct import.

I will close these thread so new discussions can begin and not be confusing.
